Teen, Struck Killed Crossing Lawrenceville Highway

The 17-year-old victim was trying to cross Lawrenceville Highway when he was hit.

Gwinnett County Police Department is reporting a fatal pedestrian accident on Lawrenceville Highway Wednesday morning.

Dakota M. Waters, 17, was struck and killed as he stood in the center lane of Lawrenceville Highway, between Hamilton and James roads, just before 7:30 a.m., according to a police press release.

Police say the teen was trying to cross the multi-lane Lawrenceville Highway when the driver of a Land Rover moved into the center lane to turn left on to James Road. The driver was unable to stop and hit the teen standing in the center lane, police reported.

Waters, in critical condition, was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where he later died.

The driver, identified as Sharen Mitchell Golden of Stone Mountain, is not facing charges at this time.

GCPD Cpl. Jake Smith added that while the weather was not listed as a contributing factor, it was relatively dark and raining at the time of the accident.

The Gwinnett County Department Accident Investigation Unit (AIU) is continuing to investigate the accident. Patch will follow up as needed.
