County Approves Funds for Pedestrian Safety Along Lawrenceville Highway

Gwinnett County Board of Commissioners' approved Tuesday more than $332,000 that will be used to improve pedestrian safety along Lawrenceville Highway in Lilburn.

The funds will help create a continuous sidewalk from Rockbridge Road to Hillcrrest Road/Main Street and to link Bryson Park and Lions Club Park, among other upgrades. The five-foot-wide sidewalk will run for about a mile along the north side of the highway.

Other upgrades will include:

• Five new transit shelter pads to enhance access to the existing Gwinnett County Transit Local 30 Route.

• The traffic signal Holly Ridge Drive/Pine Road will be upgraded for full pedestrian access, including crosswalks and pedestrian signals. The city of Lilburn is funding part of the signal work.

"I’m pleased to partner with Lilburn officials to increase walkability and safety for our residents," said District 2 Commissioner Lynette Howard in a press release. "Projects like this one are important for connecting neighborhoods and increasing pedestrian access to recreation, shopping and transit opportunities."

The contract was awarded to ISC, Inc., the lowest of three bidders at $332,454.25. An American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grant is covering the cost of construction, with the exception of the signal upgrades. SPLOST funds paid for the design and right-of-way acquisition.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2013.
