Former Gwinnett Commissioner Reportedly Files for Bankruptcy

Kenerly lists debts of $3.5 million.

Former Gwinnett County Commissioner Kevin Kenerly, who left office amid a scandal in 2010, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, according to a published report.

Kenerly reported assets of less than $50,000 and debts of about $3.5 million, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

He represented District 4, which includes Lawrenceville, Braselton, Buford and Sugar Hill. Kenerly left office amid a grand-jury investigation into allegations that commissioners overpaid for some land deals that benefited commissioners' allies.

The AJC report said that Kenerly's debts include $1.6 million on a house in Chateau Elan in Braselton, custom designed with nine bedrooms and 12 bathrooms, and currently for sale at $2.8 million. He also has outstanding balances on three vehicles, all purchased in 2009.

Kenerly was indicted in October 2010 by the Gwinnett grand jury on bribery charges, but the indictment was overturned in July 2011 by the Georgia Court of Appeals.
