Gov. Deal Names Panel to Decide Balfour's Fate in Senate

The Senate and House Majority Leaders and a retired state Supreme Court Justice will decide if Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville, will be able to stay in office.

Two top politicians and a retired judge will decide whether State Sen. Don Balfour, R-Snellville, can remain in office while under indictment.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Gov. Nathan Deal named Senate Majority Leader Ronnie Chance, R-Tyrone, House Majority Leader Larry O’Neal, R-Bonaire, and retired Chief Justice George Carley to a panel which will review Balfour's case.

In September, Balfour was indicted on 18 counts related to the misuse of his legislative expense account.

He posted a $5,000 bond and was released from the Fulton County jail earlier this month.

The panel will decide if Balfour is fit to continue serving as senator. They have until Nov. 15 to reach a final decision.

If suspended, Balfour would still collect his $17,000 salary as a legislator, but could not act in an official capacity. Also, his seat would remain vacant until the next election.

Balfour represents parts of Dacula, Grayson, Lawrenceville, Lilburn, Loganville and Snellville.
