Gov. Deal Signs Immigration Bill

Senate Bill 87 is similar to law enacted last year in Arizona.

Gov. Nathan Deal signed into law Friday the immigration bill that was passed in the recent Georgia General Assembly.

The measure, Senate Bill 87, called the “Illegal Immigration Reform and Enforcement Act of 2011,” is similar to one passed in Arizona last year. It gives police more power to investigate the immigration status of suspects, requires new hiring practices for businesses by using an employment eligibility verification system and punishes those who help illegal immigrants.

Deal told the AJC, "While I believe immigration is an issue that... should be addressed at the federal level, this legislation I believe is a responsible step forward in the absence of federal action."
