Lilburn Sunday Alcohol Sales to Start Dec. 18

City council approved a new ordinance after a referendum on Sunday packaged alcohol sales passed in last month's ballot.

Sunday, Dec. 18, will be a historic day in Lilburn: The first on which packaged alcohol can be bought on a Sunday since at least prohibition.

After Lilburn voters last month opted to allow Sunday sales, city council on Monday adopted a new ordinance regulating the days and hours alcohol can be sold, effective immediately.

- A new zoning resolution and official zoning map was approved. The resolution aims to simplify the city's zoning ordinance and make it more clear and concise. It also gives residents "incentives to redevelop" their properties, said Doug Stacks, planning and economic director for the city.

- City council approved an alarm system ordinance that aims to by charging a fee when police have to repeatedly respond to alarms for no reason.

- The council awarded Falcon Design a contract for the concept design phase, surveying, construction documents and construction administration for the Killian Hill multi-use path. The fee is not to exceed $165,000. The path will complete a 6.8 mile loop around the city for pedestrians and bikers. "It really is a milestone for the city," Mayor Diana Preston said.

- A resolution was passed on the funding and grant match for a Highway 29 multi-use trail project. The path will go from Boston Market on Highway 29 to Postal Way, Councilman and Mayor-Elect Johnny Crist said.

- City council adopted an agreement with the Lilburn Community Improvement District to work together, using multiple funding sources, on the realignment of Main Street and multi-use paths along the new road. (Lilburn Patch will have more information soon this agreement and the projects.)

- The council accepted a donation of $8,299 from the Lilburn Woman's Club. The donation reimburses the capital projects fund for the city's purchase of a Polaris ATV.
