Meetings Tonight at Schools Offering Transfers

Meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. at Berkmar High, Hopkins Elementary and Sweetwater Middle.

Meetings are scheduled tonight at three area schools identified as “need improvement” schools to inform parents of their options, including student transfers to another school.

The meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. at Berkmar High and Hopkins Elementary schools in Lilburn, and at Sweetwater Middle School in Lawrenceville, which feeds into Berkmar High.

Under provisions of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, schools that have not made state-mandated standards for two or more consecutive years may fall into a category that allows transfers.

According to Gwinnett County Schools, once schools that are in “needs improvement” status must make AYP two years in a row to move out of that status, during which time transfers may be offered.

The schools designated as accepting transfer students also are holding AYP information sessions this week: Alford Elementary, July 26, 6 p.m.; McKendree Elementary, July 28, 6 p.m.; Dacula Middle, July 26, 6 p.m.; Twin Rivers Middle, July 28, 6 p.m.; Archer High, July 26, 6 p.m.; and Mountain View High, July 27, 6 p.m.

Families of Berkmar High, Hopkins and Sweetwater should have received a letter on the options and details on the meetings.

Requests for transfers will be accepted until Aug. 5.
