Some Mail Processing Operations Moving to Duluth

USPS announces plans for transition to North Metro Processing and Distribution Center in Duluth.

The U.S. Postal Service is planning to move some mail processing operations from the Atlanta Processing and Distribution Center at 3900 Crown Road in Atlanta to the North Metro Processing and Distribution Center at 1605 Boggs Road in Duluth. The transition, which is expected to start about Feb. 27, is the result of a study begun in 2009 and a decline in mail volume, according to a press release issued Thursday (Nov. 15) by the USPS.

“Given the drastic 20 percent decline in mail volume the Postal Service has experienced since 2007, we must take action to reduce the size of our mail processing network,” Atlanta District Manager Salvatore Vacca said in the press release. “Consolidating operations and placing our people where we need them is necessary if the Postal Service is to remain viable to provide mail service to the nation. The North Metro facility has the capacity to handle the additional workload and we can realize significant savings by shifting operations there.”

Some employees may be reassigned to the North Metro facility or to other vacant positions as a result of the move, but the overall impact on employees is anticipated to be minimal.

“This move will not cause any changes in local mail delivery,” said Vacca. “Letters mailed to local addresses will be delivered the next day, the same as before. I am confident the transition will be smooth and transparent to our customers and they will continue to receive the same excellent service they always have.”

Full retail services will still be available at the facility at 3900 Crown Road. The Business Mail Entry Unit will remain open for deposit of discounted or permit imprint mail.
