Sunday Sales on Council Agenda

Monday's Lilburn City Council meeting to discuss adding Sunday alcohol sales to the November ballot.

The Lilburn City Council will vote on adding Sunday alcohol sales to the November ballot at its monthly meeting Monday night at City Hall.

A call for putting the referendum before the voters has been added to the meeting agenda, the city emailed Friday afternoon.  The meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday. A pdf of the agenda is attached to this file.

Based on the recommendation of the Lilburn Downtown Development Authority, which voted in favor of the issue at its April meeting, the mayor and council will consider submitting “to the citizens of the City the opportunity to vote on a referendum to allow Sunday alcohol sales at their earliest convenience,” according to the agenda.

The decision comes on the heels of Gov. Nathan Deal’s signing last week of Senate Bill 10, which allows communities to vote on the issue.

It’s certainly no surprise that the council will vote on Sunday sales. On top of the DDA’s recommendation, Mayor Diana Preston said she thought it made sense to add the referendum.

"This will allow our citizens to decide if they want to extend alcohol sales to Sundays," Preston said Friday afternoon. "Since we have a scheduled election, there will not be any additional cost to include on the ballot."

The council also will vote on recommendations to:

-Support the expansion of the boundaries by seven properties of the Lilburn Community Improvement District.

-Include the position of Police Captain into an unclassified/exempt status.

-Consider short-term benefits for communications officer Tim Smith, who is battling a number of health concerns.

In its work session held before the 7:30 p.m. meeting, the council will discuss the possibility of establishing tennis court usage fees, among other issues.
