Traffic Cams Coming to Pleasant Hill Road

Approved project will install more cameras and monitoring capabilities to Pleasant Hill Road.

A six-mile stretch of Pleasant Hill Road between Lawrenceville and Buford highways, including parts of Lilburn, will see more traffic monitoring, the county announced this week.

On Tuesday, the county Board of Commissioners approved a $847,668 project that will install cameras and fiber optic cables to allow the Gwinnett Traffic Control Center to monitor and react to the highly congested area. Part of the project, awarded to R.J. Haynie, Inc., also includes three miles of Ga. 20 near the Mall of Georgia. The work will be paid for with state transportation and 2009 SPLOST funds.

The cameras will be integrated into the Department of Transportation’s GC Smart Commute program, which can be accessed by residents who want to see live traffic video to plan their commutes. Live feeds show a loop of real-time video from about a dozen busy intersections during peak hours. Other intersections also are shown during off-peak times.

The intersection of Lawrenceville Highway and Beaver Ruin Road is included in this loop.

Around 115 cameras are operational in the system, with around 60 more planned in the next several years, the Gwinnett DOT says.
