Berkmar Fourth in State in Washington Post Rankings

The High School Challenge Index measured each school's success and commitment to preparing students for college.

was ranked 152nd in the nation — and fourth in the state — in the Washington Post’s High School Challenge Index rankings of public schools released last week.

While not a measure of the overall quality of a school, the Post report contends the index indicates a school’s success in preparing average students for college. The index is determined by taking the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and other college-level tests given by each school and dividing it by the number of its senior graduates.

More than 1,900 pubic high schools with indices of 1.0 or above were included in the report.

The rankings are based on 2010 data.

Berkmar’s index was 3.82. No. 1 on the list was the Science/Engineering Magnet School in Dallas, Texas, which had an index of 17.186. Georgia schools ranked ahead of Berkmar were: Walton (Marietta), 111th, 4.141; DeKalb School of the Arts (Avondale Estates), 140th, 3.895; Riverwood International Charter (Sandy Springs) 3.824.

Lilburn’s other public high school, Parkview, was 348th with an index of 2.855, or 16th among Georgia schools.
