Berkmar Places Second in County Readers Rally

Berkmar placed second behind Brookwood High School's team in the school district.

climbed to the finals to place second behind 's team in Gwinnett County's annual Readers Rally this week.

The contest attracted more than 100 school teams with students in grades 4-12. On Thursday, the top four elementary schools, top two middle schools and top high schools met for the final showdown.

Clayborn Knight, principal of Nesbit Elementary, hosted the final fast-paced quiz bowl, and GCPS TV filmed the play-by-play action. Judges, team members, coaches and principals filled the studio to cheer their teams on.

"Students eagerly showed off their knowledge of the selected books they had read and quickly buzzed in answers, many times before the questions had even been entirely read aloud," school district officials said in a press statement."Proud parents watched via video monitors set up in nearby classrooms and readily cheered on the action."

Lawrenceville's , which is located in the Brookwood Cluster, claimed the title of 2012 Elementary Readers Rally Champion. Jackson Elementary School was runner-up. The other two final teams were Chattahoochee Elementary and Head Elementary schools.

In the middle school competition, Lawrenceville's beat out Sweetwater Middle School for the title of 2012 Middle School Readers Rally Champion. Like the high school and elementary school winners, Crews Middle is located in the Brookwood Cluster.

"It was great to see the level of excitement that this competition has built among students and schools," said Greg LaHatte, director of broadcast and distance learning. "Watching them compete, based upon knowledge gained from reading books, was truly inspiring."
