Children Steal the Show at Area School Board Meeting

Camp Creek Elementary students upstage district officials, and their principal receives a standing ovation.

School district officials may have had important issues to cover when they attended the area school board meeting in Lilburn earlier this week. But, it was Camp Creek Elementary that stole the show.

Dressed in 1950s attire, a troupe of singers and dancers from the elementary school entertained the audience with a rousing routine. Set to "Love Will Keep Us Together," a song made popular by Captain & Tennille's debut album in the mid-1970s, the student's performance even caused the school board members to break out in smiles.

Parents and teachers in the audience could be seen bobbing their heads, swaying and laughing. One little girl, seen in the middle of the attached video, especially drew attention with her expressive rendition.

One man yelled in the audience that she had "a lot of spunk." Another man said "I hope someone's recording this!"

Not only were the Camp Creek Elementary students rewarded with a rousing applause, but so was the school's principal, Kathy Jones.

After 32 years in education, she is retiring at the end of this school year. She's been the principal at Camp Creek Elementary since 2002.

Board member Dr. Robert McClure said she would be sorely missed at the Lilburn elementary school and the county.

"We're delighted for you, but extremely sad for us," he said during the Tuesday meeting.

The audience agreed, and gave the veteran educator a standing ovation. (Click here to read a Patch profile on Jones.)

As for the business of the area school board meeting, Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks discussed three main initiatives: the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) Curriculum, eClass, and a new evaluation for teachers.

Additionally, Wilbanks briefly discussed the 2014 fiscal year budget, for which the audience gave a round of applause because no forlough days are included.
