Curious Lilburn Students Present at Science Fair

More than 1,000 students participated in the Gwinnett County regional science fair Feb. 22.

More than 1,000 students, including those from Lilburn, participated in the 35th annual Gwinnett County Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday, Feb. 22.

This was the first year that students from Hopkins Elementary in Lilburn participated in the regional science fair. Grade levels third, fourth and fifth were represented.

Jessie Kelly, the science specialist at the school, said the student were very motivated, and did their projects within a science club to prepare.

I'm super proud of our kids," she said. "I can't wait to do it again next year."

It is the county's largest regional event, and students come from public schools, private schools, homeschools and more.

The theme this year is "Motivating the Next Generation of Science and Engineering Leaders—from Classroom to Career."

Judges announced the winners late Friday night. Check the event's website next week to learn who all the winners are. 

One Lilburn student also presented at special symposium, where he was juded professionals. Aprotim Cory Bhowmik, a junior at Parkview High, earned first place at the school-level science fair for this honor.

His project is entitled “Hemodynamic Interactions in Arterial Networks with Atherosclerosis."

Students at these Lilburn-area schools participated:

Berkmar Cluster:

  • Bethesda Elementary: Six students, six projects

Meadowcreek Cluster:

  • Meadowcreek High School: Three students, three projects
  • Radloff Middle School: Two students, two projects
  • Hopkins Elementary School: Five students, five projects

Parkview Cluster:

  • Parkview High School: Six students, five projects
  • Trickum Middle School: 21 students, 17 projects
  • Arcado Elementary School: Four students, four projects
