Five Things To Know Aug. 8 (School Edition)

Some quick hits about the start of the school year.

Good morning, Lilburn. It's Monday, Aug. 8. School's in session and it's going to be OK, kids.

1. Board Representation: Lilburn’s 13 area schools are well-represented on the Gwinnett Board of Education. According to the Gwinnett County Public Schools website, four of the five school districts include at least portions of the high school clusters that serve Lilburn students. Our Board reps are: Carole Boyce, District I (which includes parts of the Berkmar and Meadowcreek clusters; Daniel Seckinger, District II (which includes part of the Berkmar cluster); Dr. Robert McClure, District IV (parts of Berkmar and Parkview); Louise Radloff, Distict V (parts of Berkmar, Parkview and Meadowcreek). McClure, a Lilburn resident, also is the board chairman.

2. Start/End Times: Parkview High School has new start (7:24 a.m.) and end (2:10 p.m.) times this year, according to the school system. Other start-finish times: 7:05 a.m.-2:10 p.m. — Berkmar High. 8:15 a.m.-2:45 p.m. — Arcado, Hopkins, Lilburn and Mountain Park elementary schools. 8:50 a.m.-3:20 p.m. — Camp Creek, Minor, Head and Knight elementary schools. 9:20 a.m.-4 p.m. — Berkmar, Lilburn and Trickum middle schools.

4. Meal News: It will cost 25 cents more for lunches and breakfasts this year. Lunch is $2 at elementary schools and $2.25 at middle and high school, and breakfast is $1.25 at all school levels. Last year, 22.2 million lunches and 9.9 million breakfasts were served at Gwinnett schools.

5. New Principal: There are 21 new principals this year in Gwinnett County, including Christine Knox at R.D. Head Elementary. Knox, a former assistant principal at Mason Elementary in Duluth, was named the new principal at Head last November, but is considered a new principal because she’s new to start the year.
