Five Things to Know July 25

Guaranteed to tell you something you didn't know yesterday.

Good morning, Lilburn. It's Monday, July 25. This summer is flying by, isn't it?

1. Two Weeks To Go: Gwinnett County Public Schools opens for the 2010 school year two weeks from today, on Monday, Aug. 8. If you’re a student, you’ve got 14 days to get to all that summer fun you thought you had more time to have. If you’re a commuter, you have the same amount of time to figure out how to get to work once the roads are filled with frequent bus stops and backups in front of schools. Here’s some things to consider: Gwinnett County buses pick up and drop off 120,662 students per day, making the system the second-largest transporter of students in the country. School buses travel 130,800 miles and makes 47,267 stops per day.

2. Gas-tronomic Figures: Gas prices continue to spike, if you haven’t notice (actually, we know you’ve noticed). The lowest end-of-the-weekend price we found in Greater Lilburn was $3.72, according to GeorgiaGasPrices.com, at the station on Lawrenceville Highway near Hood Road and the on Arcado Road at North River Drive. Hope you’re sitting down … That’s 36 cents higher than what we reported a month ago.

3. What’s in Our Name? R.L. Ferris (yep, frequent Lilburn Patch photo contributor Richard Ferris) was the first to answer Friday’s trivia question on how Lilburn got its name. His answer came with a little bit of local history: “The city of Lilburn was founded in 1890 by the Seaboard Airline Railway. The area previously known as McDaniel was renamed Lilburn, after the general superintendent of the railroad, Lilburn Trigg Myers of Virginia.” Good work, Richard.

4. How ‘Bout Another Trivia Question? How did , which is now located on Killian Hill Road, get its name?
