Schools Take First Head Count

Hopkins in Lilburn had the most students among county elementary schools.

The first head count of the school year was 5,500 students fewer than what Gwinnett County Public Schools forecasted for 2011-12, but district planners expect the numbers to grow significantly by early September.

The district counted 156,959 enrolled students in a preliminary count on Tuesday, shy of the 162,459 that were forecasted.

But district spokesman Jorge Quintana pointed out that the number usually rises drastically by the final count after Labor Day. He said last year’s post-Labor Day enrollment was 5,068 students more than the initial count.
