Lilburn Schools Getting Academic Intervention

Beginning with the 2012-2013 school year, a number of schools must develop new programs to ensure future academic success.

Now that the state of Georgia is no longer bound by No Child Left Behind standards, several Gwinnett County schools have new targered requirements.

The Lilburn-area schools affected include: , Sweetwater Middle School, and Meadowcreek High School. In total, there are 11 schools in Gwinnett County that are directed to create new plans, according to information from Gwinnett County Public Schools.

Beginning this school year, officials said that educational facilities designated as "priority" or "focus" will develop a Title I-funded "Flexible Learning Program" (FLP) that gives students who are at risk of failing with additional learning opportunities.

Lilburn Middle, Sweetwater Middle and Berkmar High are "focus" schools, which rank in the lowest five percent of Title I schools in the state on achievement of all students in statewide assessments and have showed a consistent lack of progress. And, Meadowcreek High is a "priority" school. In some cases, "priority" schools have a graduation rate of less than 60 percent over the past two years.

Each school will hold meetings to help families and community partners be a part of student success. If a parent's child or children qualify for more help, school officials will contact them. (A letter sent to parents over the summer is attached here.)

In addition, Title I schools designated as "priority" or "focus" schools will have support intervention for three years. Every three years new schools also will be identified.

Whether schools have the new requirements depends on student performance and academic gaps between subgroups of students (race, for example), graduation rates, and subject-area achievement. This year's determination was based on 2011-2012 criteria.
