Lilburn Students Share Broad Prize

A total of 51 Gwinnett students — including four from Berkmar High School — will receive portion of $1 million in Broad Prize scholarships.

Four Berkmar High School students are among 51 students district-wide who will received part of $1 million in scholarships being awarded in connection with Gwinnett County Public Schools’ 2010 Broad Prize for Urban Education.

Ana Barrera, Diamond Bledsoe, Ioana Creta and Kevin Jordan were selected as scholarship recipients based on their applications and the recommendations of an independent review committee comprised of admissions, enrollment and financial aid professionals from colleges and universities.

Three students from Meadowcreek High School, which is fed by many Lilburn-area schools, also were on the list: Miriam Choudry, Lemien Mehari and Hiral Patel.

Recipients who enroll in a four-year college will receive a $20,000 scholarship paid out over four years ($5,000 per year). Students who enroll in two-year colleges or technical programs receive $5,000 scholarships paid out over two years ($2,500 per year).

In 2010, The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation awarded the Broad Prize to GCPS. The prize is awarded to urban school districts that show the greatest improvement in student achievement and overall performance while narrowing achievement gaps between income and ethnic groups.
