Parkview Sweeps Archer in Tuesday Night Soccer

Panthers dominate possession but lack a finishing touch.

Both Archer teams put up a valiant effort in losses to Parkview Tuesday night. The Panther girls won 2-1 and the boys won 2-0.

The Panther boys (7-6-0) put on a shooting clinic against the Tigers (3-6-1) in the first matchup between the schools. Archer is in its third year of soccer, and first year competing in Region 8.

Archer had lost to Berkmar 6-0 and Brookwood 8-0 earlier in the season. Tuesday night’s game against Parkview could have resulted in a similar score line had the Panthers had a finishing touch.

Parkview had a shot nearly every minute on target, but most shots went inches past the post or into the hands of Archer keeper Steven Taberes.

The lack of communication for Parkview was evident six minutes into the game when C.J. Ciarlante and Jonathon Jarrett both deferred the opportunity to take an open shot to each other, giving ample time for the defenders to converge.

Jarrett and Ciarlante would redeem their blunder with three minutes left in the half.

Jarrett sent a powerful cross into the box for Ciarlante, who swung his leg but slipped on the dew-covered grass and missed the ball as he fell. Bryan Ramirez on the far right side of the field collected the ball and sent in a powerful cross to the feet of a still rising Ciarlante. Ciarlante connected this time and powered the ball past the Archer keeper for a 1-0 Parkview lead.

Jose Diaz, Pete Charter, Santiago Gubitosi, Sammy Korgi, Jarrett and Ciarlante all had chances in the first half to put Parkview ahead 2-0, but none of them could find the back of the net.

Korgi, who has played defense, midfield, and forward for the Panthers as they look to solve their team chemistry, noticed the lack of finishing after the game.

He said, “We had chances but we couldn’t put it in the back of the net. Maybe it has to do with effort, but I think it will naturally come. We are playing better.”

Archer’s keeper Taberes held the line and kept the Tigers in the game.

The half ended with Parkview up 1-0.

The second half saw much of the same from the Panthers and Tigers. Gubitosi’s free kick five minutes into the half from 30 yards out curled away from the keeper and inches above the top left corner of the post and out of bounds.

Jarrett showed a brilliant display of flair with 24 minutes left to go in the game.

Collecting the ball on the right side of the field, Jarrett proceeded to dribble into the top right corner of the box straight toward Archer defender Abraham Sesay. Jarrett faked to the right and then turned on a dime to the left to leave Sesay stumbling. Jarrett shot went in past Taberes who had come off his line to help his defender.

Parkview was up 2-0 as the Archer Tigers’ fighting spirit decreased.

Andree Duenas entered in the last few minutes of the game and almost had a goal. Duenas broke away from two defenders and shot as Taberes rushed him, the shot deflected off the goalie and popped up high in the air.

Duenas and the defenders followed the flight of the ball as its arc dropped right in front of the goal. Duenas attempted to head the ball in but Archer defender Versay Sesay headed the ball first, sending it flying away as Duenas’ head collided with the defender.

The game was missing a competitive flavor  that other Parkview games this season have had. There were no hard tackles or cheap fouls. The referee never warned a player or had reason to caution anyone from either team. It was a game of great sportsmanship from both teams.

Parkview keepers Jack Falle and Diego Casillas split time and had very little activity all night to record a clean sheet.

Archer’s Micheal Ward and Zach Walchholz tried to penetrate through the Panther defense but were unable to create any chances in the box.

Any threats by Archer were effectively pushed back by Parkview’s defensive rotations including Diaz, Zach Kammer, Justus King, Lopez, Abel Nguyen, Tommy Lehner and Ramirez.

Archer Coach Jamie Wellington can teach this burgeoning program a valuable lesson as the Tigers were able to hold Parkview to only two goals.

Panthers sophomore Korgi said, “We’ve played better the last five or six games. The coach likes the way we played tonight and we are picking it up heading into playoffs.”

The Panthers can lock up a spot in playoffs if they win Thursday night against Shiloh starting at 5:30 p.m.
