School Notes: Parkview, Berkmar Receive AP Recognition

Mountain Park counselor honored by county.

Berkmar and Parkview high schools were among the 17 Gwinnett County schools to earn “2011 AP Honor Schools” recognition from the Georgia Department of Education.

Both schools were recognized in more than one AP (Advanced Placement) category.

Berkmar was honored in: AP Access and Support (Schools with 30 percent of AP test takers that are African-American or Hispanic, and at least 30 percent of all AP exams scoring 3 or higher) and AP STEM (Schools with students testing in at least two AP Mathematics courses and two AP Science courses).

Parkview was honored in AP STEM and AP Merit (Schools with at least 20 percent of students taking AP exams and at least half of the AP exams scoring a 3 or higher).

—David Young, a counselor at Mountain Park Elementary School was named the 2011 Gwinnett County Counselor Writer of the Year. Young, who authored the book, “Skits, Raps & Poems for the School Counselor,” was one of five counselors honored as part of National School Counselor Week.

—Parkview’s stock market team won first place in Georgia in the Fall Stock Market Game, increasing the value of its portfolio from $100,000 to $278,000 in 10 weeks. The team beat 3,713 other teams in Georgia.

—Trickum Middle is among four of the top teams to advance to the state finals of the PAGE Academic Bowl for Middle Grades State Finals.
