Standout Students: Trickum Middle Students Get Top Math Honors

sixth-grader Jason Fan won first place in a state math competition, and a team from the school took second place for sixth-grade students.

The team, which included Fan, Tyler Draper, Kevin Mathew, Jake Wiley and Mary Xu, placed second in the Georgia Mathematics League's State School Division for sixth grade students, and Fan was named 2011 State Individual Winner for his grade level, according to a media release by the Gwinnett County Public Schools.

The Math League is held for grades four-eight and for high school students. More than a million students from the U.S. and Canada take part in the competitions every year, GCPS said. The program aims to "encourage student interest and build confidence in mathematics by solving problems."
