-  Accomplishments: Dina Hassan of Berkmar High School and Tiffany Agard of Parkview have been awarded $2,500 National Achievement scholarships, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Wednesday. They are among the 800 outstanding black American seniors nationwide to receive the scholarships through the National Achievement Scholarship Program, a privately funded competition formed in 1964 to honor and provide scholarships to black students. More than 160,000 applied for consideration in the program as juniors. In Georgia, 64 students were selected.

- Key to Their Awesomeness: Hassan, a Lawrenceville resident, and Agard, who lives in Lilburn, made it through four rounds of consideration to make the final list. After making the first cut from 160,000 to 1,600 semifinalists, each student had to show consistently high academic performance, including a high score in the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (taken their junior years), a recommendation from an official at his or her high school, and write an essay. The 1,600 were cut to 1,300 finalists who were selected based on accomplishments and potential for academic success in college. Hassan plans to study International Relations/Diplomatic Services; Agard’s interest is in International Relations.
