Rhodes was tested all night, starting with a shot 15 minutes into the game by Jonathan Jarrett. Parkview’s Marcos Lopez passed to Santiago Gubatosi whose shot was saved by Rhodes. Jarrett shot and Rhodes made another save. The rebound came back to Jarrett and his second curling attempt hit the post and bounced out of bounds.

Jarrett was instrumental in frustrating Grayson’s defender Mitchell Tiah. Jarrett and Tiah were pushing for position on a free kick when Tiah shoved Jarrett with two hands. The referee had no choice but to give Tiah a yellow card and to point to the penalty spot with 11 minutes left in the half.

Parkview’s Pete Charter scored the penalty to Rhodes left. Parkview’s celebration was cut short when the linesman made the call that a Parkview player had entered the box prior to the kick. The goal was disallowed.

Parkview’s Charter spent the night dribbling past three, four, five, and sometimes six defenders.

The Panthers went into the half tied 0-0.

Five minutes into the second half Parkview had several chances to make a goal.

Jarrett shot above the crossbar on a breakaway. Zachary Welch, back from injury, provided Bryan Ramirez with a beautiful pass but the shot was stopped by Grayson’s Rhodes. Abel Nguyen crossed from the left said when Sammy Korgi let the ball pass through his legs as Gubatosi called for the ball and sent a rocket of a shot into the hands of an outstretched Rhodes.

Grayson gained their composure after the flurry of shots. What followed was 30 minutes of box-to-box defensive soccer. Though small-framed, Parkview’s Jose Diaz and Lopez were defensive stalwarts throughout the night. Grayson’s defense kept a strong line to give Rhodes a break.

With nine minutes to go in the game, Jarrett once again had a one-on-one breakaway with the goalie. He shot low but was stopped by Rhodes and his second attempt went flying over the bar.

In the spirit of March Madness Parkview attempted to win the game in the very last seconds. With 10 seconds to go Jarrett was given yet another chance against Rhodes. The breakaway was on but as Jarrett lost his defender and took a shot the horn sounded.

The 0-0 tie at the end of regulation meant two halves of overtime.

The first half of overtime was a defensive battle, neither team taking chances in fear of conceding a goal.

The second half of overtime saw only two shots on goal.

Gubatosi’s free kick was blocked by Rhodes with two minutes left. Parkview’s captain, Charter, gathered the ball with two defenders and the goalie in front of him. He pulled back the ball to lose the two defenders and took a shot that curled an inch past the left post with 50 seconds left in the game.

Overtime ended with a 0-0 tie.

Rhodes was unable to make a stop Tuesday night in the penalty shootout. Falle, Parkview’s keeper,. showed off his shooting and goalie techniques. Not only did he score one of Parkview’s penalty kicks into the top netting, he also made two crucial saves to hand the Panthers a win.

Parkview’s win snapped a two-game losing streak as they try to climb up the ladder to gain a spot in the playoffs.

The boys play Friday (7:30 p.m.) against Bishop England in Charleston, S.C.

Parkview’s girls (6-4) won 0-0 (4-1 in penalties) against Grayson (9-3-1) Tuesday night.

The girls now have two wins in a row as they try to gain momentum heading into the playoff spot battle.

Regulation and overtime ended with a 0-0 tie in a defensive battle.

Parkview’s keeper Asha Wright blocked two penalties to hand Parkview girls their second win in a row.

The Parkview girls are not accustomed to losing so many games in a season. They have not been winning by wide margins lately either, but a win is a win for a former powerhouse that is slowly finding its form.

The girls also play Friday against Bishop England in Charleston, S.C.
