Parkview Soccer Sweeps Saturday Games

Lady Panthers beat Norcross 1-0; the boys beat Grissom 2-1.

The boys and girls Parkview soccer teams rebounded from losses Friday night to defeat their respective foes Saturday. The Lady Panthers beat Norcross 1-0; the boys beat Grissom 2-1.

The Grissom Tigers (19-2) traveled to Lilburn from Huntsville, AL, to face the Parkview Panthers (9-7).

The Tigers struck first by scoring in the first 10 minutes. Grissom forced numbers into the box and took the ball down the right side and down the end line. As Grissom went to cross, the ball deflected off Panthers’ Jose Diaz and past Parkview’s keeper Diego Casillas. Grissom led 1-0.

Parkview’s Jonathon Jarrett made a beautiful pass over his head to teammate Raymond Muro whose shot went wide left with 12 minutes left before halftime.

Jarrett was in the giving mood as a minute later he gave up a shot at goal to drop the ball back to teammate C.J. Ciarlante. Ciarlante passed it back to Jarrett who took a shot but was blocked. Ciarlante picked up the rebound and shot it past the Grissom keeper John Wilson Booth to tie the game at 1-1.

Nick Smith of Grissom received his first yellow for aggressive pushing on Parkview’s Sammy Korgi with four minutes left in the half.

The half ended tied 1-1.

Grissom looked the more aggressive team in the first few minutes of the second half.

Grissom opened the half with a chance by Mitch Wilson as he sprinted past Panther defender Marcos Lopez on a through pass and scored on keeper Casillas. But as Wilson celebrated the referee realized the offside flag was up and nullified the goal. The game remained 1-1.

Grissom’s Smith followed his yellow with a hasty tackle from behind on Korgi with 30 minutes to go in the game. The referee had no choice but to give Smith his second yellow, which resulted in a red card.

The Tigers were furious and continued their attack on the Panther goal.

Mathew Volz almost put the Tigers ahead by sprinting past the Panther defenders as Casillas came out to stop the shot. Grissom’s Jake Vayda sneaked in the middle of the box unmarked. As Volz made the pass he was bothered enough by Panther’s Zach Kammer to send the pass way off from its intended target. Parkview would have conceded a goal if Volz pass had connected with Vayda.

Parkview’s Abel Nguyen made a very accurate through pass to Jarrett, who took on a defender and got off a shot in a hurry. The goalie dove to the ground partially blocking the ball with his left hand. The ball squirmed its way out of his hands and towards the goal but the keeper stretched his right hand and trapped the ball with his fingertips to save the Tigers.

Pete Charter and Nguyen created problems for the Tigers all game with their impressive passing in midfield. Nguyen was placed in midfield as regular center midfielder Santiago Gubitosi was unavailable due to sickness.

Nguyen provided another ball for Jarrett with 22 minutes left in the game. Jarrett collected the ball and broke away from his defenders. He shot a powerful shot past the left of the diving keeper.

Parkview led 2-1 and never let the Grissom Tigers get through their defense for the rest of the game.

The Panthers will now prepare to host their rivals the Brookwood Broncos (10-3-0) Friday at 8 p.m. in the Big Orange Jungle.

Lady Panthers narrowly beat the Norcross Blue Devils 1-0

Panther’s goalkeeper Asha Wright put on a show Saturday afternoon with her myriad of saves and well-placed free kicks from midfield.

Parkview’s Maddie Ober had a number of chances early in the game to put the Panthers ahead. On one, she could not get her head to connect with a cross from Kiki Nelson.

The Lady Panthers strung together an impressive series of passes to score the only goal of the match. Alex Ober passed to Kayla Carr who passed to Stephanie Gutierrez who passed back to Carr and back to Gutierrez.

The Lady Panthers held the 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half.

Iris Gonzalez provided a back pass to Alex Ober at the top of the box who took her time and shot into the keeper’s hands with three minutes into the second half.

Norcross coach Judas Kinchen received a straight red for complaining to the referee with 33 minutes left in the game.

Panther keeper Wright was taking the free kicks around the middle of the field. With 27 minutes to go she kicked one that took a bounce in the box and went over the arms of Blue Devil’s keeper Jess Martin and hit the top bar.
