Drink Mix Science in a Minute

This is a simple but fun twist on a classic experiment.  The classic experiment is to add one or two drops of food coloring to a test tube or glass of water then watch it disperse.  It makes a very pretty swirly type pattern.  You can drop in hot, warm, or cold water and see the changes in the dispersion rate or how the swirly pattern changes.

Now for the twist.  Use your drink drops or powder and take a minute to watch the pattern.  You are getting ready for a run or taking the kids out to the park include a quick experiment.  Turn the boring act of getting the drinks together into something a little more interesting.  Take minute to use those science observing eyes to watch those drops or powder do their thing.  Simply watch or come up with questions to answer like: Does it make a difference if you use room temperature water or a bottle from the fridge?  Do I use more or less drops depending on the temperature?  Does the powder dissolve faster or slower depending on the temp?  What does shaking do?

You are now a scientist.  What is your next opportunity to test your skills?  Do you know someone who needs a science fair project idea?  Give them an idea!
