Lilburn Elementary School

Since 1970, when it opened on the land formerly owned by the area's first settlers (the McDaniel family), Lilburn Elementary School has been a melting pot of different cultures.

More than 50 countries and 34 languages are represented in the school's 1,340 students -- 77 percent of the student population speaks a language other than English.

The school has evolved over the years from rural to suburban to transient urban/suburban, but it has embraced its many changes.

A Georgia School of Excellence in 2006, Lilburn Elementary has faced its challenges head-on. The school has annually met the Adequate Yearly Progress standards since 2002 and has been recognized as a Georgia Title I Distinguished School since 2004.

Student-centered in its focus, the school has seen tremendous improvements in standardized test scores. For example, students in the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program saw an increase of 15 points in math from 2007-08 to 2008-09.

Principal Wandy Taylor had been at the school since 2008.
