Berkmar Students, Parents Learn About Public School Choice

As a "Needs Improvement" school, Berkmar High is offering its students the option to transfer to Mountain View and Archer high schools.

Berkmar High School students and parents attended a Public School Choice informational meeting Monday evening to help decide if transferring to another school would be ideal for them.  Parents of Berkmar students recently received a mailed letter stating that they have the option of transferring to either Mountain View or Archer high school, both fairly new Lawrenceville schools that are in considered to be in good standing according to the Adequate Yearly Progress standards. The reason for the option is because Berkmar did not pass the AYP minimums, which, under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (formerly known as No Child Left Behind Act), gives students the ability to transfer to certain good-standing schools that haven't …

Meetings Tonight at Schools Offering Transfers

Meetings are scheduled at 6 p.m. at Berkmar High, Hopkins Elementary and Sweetwater Middle.

Meetings are scheduled tonight at three area schools identified as “need improvement” schools to inform parents of their options, including student transfers to another school. Mixed News for Schools in AYP Report

Hopkins Elementary, Berkmar High both designated as "Needs Improvement" schools.

There was good and not-so-good news regarding Lilburn-area schools in Adequate Yearly Progress reports released by the Georgia Department of Education Thursday. First the good: Lilburn Elementary and Berkmar Middle were among the four Gwinnett County Public Schools that made AYP in 2010-11 after not making the standard last year. Seven other Lilburn-area schools — Trickum Middle, Camp Creek, Knight, Arcado, Minor, Head and Mountain Park elementary schools — all achieved AYP standards again. Now, the not-so-good: Berkmar High and Hopkins Elementary are among the four county schools that will face consequences for not meeting state standards for the second year in a row. Overall, 102 out of Gwinnett County's 127 public schools met the state’…
