Berkmar's Graduation Rate Increases While Parkview Sees Dip

The Georgia Department of Education released the 2012 graduation rates recently. Berkmar High's rate has increased more than 10 percentage points since 2011 while Parkview's decreased 0.34 percent.

While one Lilburn high school is seeing an increase in its graduating students, another has seen a slight decrease. According to data released this week from the state Department of Education, Berkmar High's graduation rate has increased more than 10 percentage points, from 47.68 in 2011 to 57.75 precent in 2012. Parkview High on the other hand isn't seeing that type of increase. While it's still higher than Berkmar's, the orange-and-white school has a graduation rate of 86.94 in 2012, a 0.34 percentage drop from the 87.28 percent it had the year before.  As a county, Gwinnett County's graduation rate increased more than three percentage points -- from 67.56 in 2011 to 70.98 percent in 2012, according to data released this week from the …

McClure to Speak at Parkview Graduation

Dr. Robert McClure will speak May 22 at Parkview High School.

Parkview High will welcome Dr. Robert McClure as one of its featured graduation speakers this week, according to district officials. The Lilburn doctor has served on the school board since 1995, and currently in his fifth term that ends in 2014. His district area includes mostly Snellville and Lilburn schools As the father of six Parkview High School graduates, McClure feels a special kinship to the school. "People often ask you why I ran for the school board, and I jokingly say I hate large crowds, confrontation and public speaking, so it seemed like a perfect fit," he said in a 2011 interview with Patch.  "But seriously, it has to do with the enjoyment I get from watching students be successful. Berkmar Soccer Player Backflips After Scoring in State Finals

Exciting second-half goal highlighted Berkmar's 2-0 win over Collins Hill in the Class AAAAAA championship game.

It's easy to understand Berkmar High School soccer player Awey Houry's excitement over his second-half goal in the Class AAAAAA soccer championship game. The senior broke away from defenders to secure Berkmar's 2-0 win over Collins Hill, the Patriots' first soccer title in school history. After the goal, Houry did a back flip before his teammates swarmed his with congratulations. Panthers, Patriots Win State Titles in Soccer

The Parkview girls and the Berkmar boys teams won Class AAAAAA titles last Saturday.

It was a big day in sports last Saturday (May 18) for Lilburn soccer teams. The Parkview girls and the Berkmar boys both won the Class AAAAAA titles in the Georgia High School Association state championships, played at Kennesaw State University. The score was 2-1 in the Lady Panthers-Harrison game, which took place at 5 p.m. The victory marks the eighth state soccer championship that the Parkview girls team has won or shared, their last title win in 2009. In the Patriots' 7:30 p.m. game, Berkmar beat Collins Hill 2-0, earning the Berkmar boys their first state title. If you missed the girls game, you can watch the action on the PlayOn! Parkview, Berkmar Soccer Head to State Playoffs

The Lady Panthers and the boys soccer team for the Patriots will be at Kennesaw State University on Saturday for their chance at winning the Class AAAAAA titles.

Two Lilburn high schools are headed to the varsity soccer state finals at Kennesaw State University this weekend. Parkview's girls soccer team will be playing against Harrison at 5 p.m. Saturday (May 18), and Berkmar's boys team will be going head-to-head against Collins Hill at 7:30 p.m. the same day. Both teams will be fighting for the Class AAAAAA titles. While the Lady Panthers have won or shared seven state girls soccer championships, the last one in 2009, the Patriots will be playing for its first soccer championship in school history. For the Berkmar game, a spirit bus is leaving the high school at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and guests are welcome to hop on board for $10. Berkmar Headed to State Finals in Boys Soccer

The team will be playing for its first soccer championship in school history.

It will be an all-Gwinnett County showdown for the Class AAAAAA boys soccer championship, and Berkmar will be a part of it. It took some extended play Wednesday night in the semifinals first, though. Collins Hill and Berkmar both needed penalty kicks to advance in the Georgia High School Association tournament. Berkmar made all seven of its PKs to beat East Coweta in Lilburn, out-shooting the visitors 7-6. The game was tied 2-2 after regulation and OT. 2013 Berkmar Valedictorian, Salutatorian

Gwinnett County Public Schools announces the names of Berkmar High School's 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian in Lilburn.

Gwinnett County Public Schools has released the names of the 2012-2013 valedictorian and salutatorian from Berkmar High School. The title of valedictorian is normally given to the student with the highest GPA, and salutatorian is given to the student with the second-highest GPA. 8 Students from Lilburn-Area Schools Chosen for Governor's Honors Program

The students will spend four weeks on the campus of Valdosta State University, where they will be able to study subjects of their choosing.

Eight students from Berkmar High, Meadowcreek High and Parkview High will spend their summer as part of the state's Governor's Honors Program. In the program, the students will take a rigorous, in-depth look at an area of interest over the course of four weeks. It is geared toward gifted and talented high school juniors and seniors. In all, 96 students in Gwinnett County Public Schools will participate in the program. Across Georgia nearly 700 students were chosen for the program. The program takes place at Valdosta State University. And, there is no cost for the students to attend. Lilburn Teams Reach State Soccer Playoffs

Parkview and Berkmar High are among schools in the Georgia High School Association's state soccer tournament.

Three schools in Lilburn have made it to the state soocer playoffs. Those schools are: Berkmar High, Parkview High, Providence Christian Academy. (See bracket list below.) In all, 27 Gwinnett County teams have qualified in five classifications for the Georgia High School Association soccer tournament. The roster includes Collins Hill’s boys and Greater Atlanta Christian's girls, who will be defending their state titles. Most first-round games in the girls tournament begin Tuesday, April 30. The boys start play May 1.
