Breast Cancer: Stuff They Never Tell You

Survivors are part of a sisterhood, whether they choose to be or not. And sharing stories – funny, sad, ironic – is what sisters do best.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007. Hearing the words, "I'm sorry, but it's cancer," comes as a shock to anyone, and I never thought I would hear them that day. I was in my mid-40s, a marathon runner, healthy eater, non-smoker, no family history. The only real risk factor I had was giving birth to my first child after age 30. I cried (hysterically), I went for a long run the next morning, I got a second opinion, I told only a handful of people and I went about my busy life trying not to think about it. I made a list of other women I knew who had fought – or were fighting – this awful disease. In a few moments, I came up with more than 15 names of women in my community, most of whom were right around my age. Clearly, I was not alone…

Showing off your pink pride during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a favorite thing to do with survivors and supporters alike. Thousands of hats, shirts, and other pink breast cancer items are sold in October. Millions of tiny pink ribbons are worn to support the cure for breast cancer and hope for many women. Also, countless numbers of people show support of Breast Cancer Awareness by participating in fundraising events. Have you strapped on your pink running shoes for the Komen Race for the Cure? If a walk is more your speed, how about the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure? Have you joined a local support group? Outer Beauty Tips Lead to Inner Strength for Women with Breast Cancer

Resources for women fighting breast cancer that your doctor doesn't offer.

By the nature of its side effects, cancer treatment can make a private battle a very public affair. For a woman with cancer, having a bald head, pale skin or a missing breast can make her feel like she's being targeted by a bright spotlight and a banner that says, "Cancer patient." But now more than ever, there are resources for women that will put the spotlight back on their work, their accomplishments and their life—and change that banner to simply read, "Woman." In metro Atlanta, the YWCA's EncorePlus program; As You Were Mastectomy Boutique, Hair With Care, and others are here to help women cancer retain confidence and beauty. (More resources can be found at Komen Atlanta's website.  Girl on the Go provides private or in-home wig …

Lilburn Mom in Sixth Year of 3-Day Walk

Judy Narde says she knows too many people who have died and been diagnosed with breast cancer. She wants to do what she can to help the fight.

Judy Narde isn't walking for herself. She's walking for her friends and family and people she doesn't even know. That's the beauty of the Susan G. Komen 3-Day walk. It brings together people of all walks of life for one main cause -- breast cancer awareness. For Narde, a Lilburn resident who has lived in Gwinnett County since 1996, it was a family friend and a sister-in-law who were diagnosed the same day seven years ago that prompted her to do her first walk. "The two of them are fine, but of course, when you get involved you meet so many more people," said Narde, 48, who is participating in her sixth walk this year. Then, someone in her church died -- on the woman's birthday, her cousin had a mastectomy the week before Narde's first 3-…

The two ladies took time to answer a few questions via e-mail from Patch before the big day: Patch: Is this your first 3-Day? Lolli and Gates: This is the first 3day for both of us.  Patch: Why did you decide to walk? Do you have a personal connection with breast cancer? Gates: Melissa and I have always been huge supporters of Relay for Life and other cancer charities- for example, we both donated to locks for love. We also both have …

I agree with you Judy! Having walked the 3-Day for two years myself I fully support Komen and their efforts. I'm very proud of all the 3-Day walkers because it takes a lot of courage and determination to do what they do. If Planned Parenthood were the only place you could get your breast health screenings, would you not go just because they support abortion? That's like cutting off your nose to …   more ›

Do You Know Where Your Pink Dollars Are Going?

All the pink leaves no doubt October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but has it become over commercialized?

According to the Better Business Bureau, some pink-labeled products actually have very little to do with breast cancer. The consumer advocacy agency advises if you’re buying pink specifically to support a charity, you might want to look into how that purchase will benefit it, and which charity will get the money. In some instances, pink is just the promotion to help get the product off the shelf. Do you think the pink campaign has become too commercialized? Has it become another revenue stream for scam artists or companies looking sell their products? Tell us in the comments below.  For anybody who wants to ensure their pink dollars support the cause, the BBB has the following tips:
