The Chick-fil-A Bowl could be a semifinal host in the system that will replace the BCS. Details are expected to be announced Wednesday.
Atlanta, which already is a strong player in college football, reportedly could become part of the new college football playoff system. ESPN has reported that the Chick-fil-A Bowl will be part of a semifinal-game playoff rotation that will replace the current Bowl Championship Series system, beginning after the 2014-2015 season. Details are expected to be announced Wednesday (April 24) in Pasadena, where college football officials have been meeting to hammer out the new "plus-one" system. The new format will be called the College Football Playoff. Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, will host the first title game under the new format on Jan. 12, 2015, ESPN reported. Under the new system, the national semifinals will rotate among six bowl …

The BCS title game payout would have meant an estimated $600,000 more in revenue for the Bulldogs.
When Georgia came up short against Alabama in the SEC title game earlier in December, it cost the Bulldogs more than a national title shot. The difference in revenue for the Bulldogs between the BCS National Championship Game and the Capital One Bowl likely is about $600,000. With bowl season beginning this past Saturday (December 15), it's another reminder that the postseason -- especially the elite BCS bowls -- is very lucrative for college teams. According to available information and estimates, SEC champion Alabama will make about $1.925 million for playing Notre Dame in the national championship game on January 7. Georgia, by virtue of its loss to the Tide, will play in the Capital One Bowl on January 1 -- a non-BCS bowl that has a …

The Dawgs will play for the SEC title in Atlanta no matter what. But to maintain any national title hope, they can't overlook their next two opponents.
Once again, the Georgia Bulldogs have overcome an early loss to South Carolina to earn their way to the SEC title game. But before heading down the road to Atlanta, the Dawgs host instate rivals Georgia Southern and Georgia Tech. “We know we’re playing in Atlanta, and that’s settled right now, but we know there’s a lot of work in the meantime, which is the job of getting better on a daily basis,” head coach Mark Richt said early this week. With eight wins, Georgia Southern is no slouch in the FCS league. Despite being the obvious favorite, the Dawgs expect a challenge both this Saturday and next. "Once a year," reports Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph, the Bulldogs face a triple-option offense "and all the cut-blocking and funky running…

As if there weren't enough to get pumped about in an SEC game, both squads still remember last year's postgame dustup between coaches.
There was some question at the beginning of the University of Georgia's football season as to whether Russ, a not-direct-line descendant who nevertheless ascended to the role of Uga IX, could give UGA the juice it needed to succeed. So far, Russ has fulfilled his responsibilities, as Georgia heads into its game against Vanderbilt with an unblemished 3-0 record. The Red and Black checks in with the pampered mascot as he continues his push through a high-pressure season. High blood pressure certainly punctuated the end of last year's Georgia-Vandy matchup, as Bulldogs defensive coordinator Todd Grantham had a heated tete-a-tete with Vanderbilt head coach James Franklin. (It's on YouTube!) The Macon Telegraph's Seth Emerson reports that the …

Here's what they're saying about the Bulldogs and Tigers in Missouri's SEC debut.
How do we know Georgia Bulldogs football is special? Because Delta Airlines is changing its flight schedule just to make sure UGA fans get to Columbia, Missouri, in time for the Tigers' inaugural SEC game. It will be a learning process. Seth Emerson of the Macon Telegraph reports the two teams are virtual strangers. Neither squad even has a scholarship player from the other's state. Georgia head coach Mark Richt did interview for the Missouri job more than a decade ago, but the teams' only previous matchup was in 1960. At least one Missouri player isn't that impressed with what he's seen of Georgia so far. Defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson told a reporter he watched some of the Georgia-Buffalo game last week, then turned it off. "It's …

The University of Georgia has a new Uga and high expectations going into the 2012 season.
ATHENS, GA -- First things first: There's a new Uga in town, and he's got a familiar face. The new Bulldog mascot, Uga IX, is none other than Russ, a frequent interim Uga during the line's tumultuous few years. The Athens Banner-Herald reports that Russ first saw Uga duty in 2009, when his half-brother, Uga VII, died. The selection is not without controversy, as some students the Banner-Herald interviewed are unhappy he's not a direct descendant of the original. Meanwhile, the human Bulldogs are preparing for their 2012 opener against Buffalo with some serious study. ESPN's DawgNation blog reports that coaches and quarterback Aaron Murray are burrowing into old game tapes from Buffalo's new defensive coordinator, Lou Tepper. The Macon …
