Rennie Curran Focuses on Respect, Hard Work in Summit for Young Men

Rennie Curran, an NFL free agent and 2007 Brookwood High graduate, spoke on Saturday, Feb. 23, to about 150 attendants.

NFL free agent Rennie Curran, a 2007 Brookwood High School graduate, gave back to his hometown over the weekend. On Feb. 23, he and the school district's Community-Based Mentoring program hosted a summit at Curran's former stomping ground. The event focused on preparing young men in grades 6-12 for career success. Curran encouraged participants to "dress for success," and offered advice on everything from choosing your friends wisely to performing well academically in order to go far in life.  --For a blast from the past, see the attached YouTube video of a 2006 game featuring Curran. Lilburn Mentors Among Those Honored by Gwinnett County Public Schools

A group of men that includes several mentors at Lilburn schools recently were honored by the school district for their dedication.

More than 80 men, including four who volunteer at Lilburn schools, recently received a huge thank you from Gwinnett County school officials for mentoring youth, according to a press release from the district. At Lilburn schools, those mentors honored were: Terry Foxx, a volunteer at Lilburn Middle School; Mike Lewis, a volunteer at Mountain Park Elementary School and Trickum Middle School; Steve Holevoet, a volunteer at Trickum Middle School and Parkview High School; and Francisco Salazar, a volunteer at Lilburn Middle School, according to a spokesman for the district. The men are a part of the school district's Community-Based Mentoring Program, which began in 2008 and provides support to students who have been identified as at-risk …
