Op-Ed: President's Re-Election Shows Country Wasn't 'Fooled' by Romney

Ilene Johnson, who was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, is elated the country didn't listen to Mitt Romney's "smooth talk," and instead sided with her hope for the future.

Last September I was proud to be a delegate to the Democratic National Convention and re-nominate Barack Obama to be President of the United States. I was elated last night to have witnessed his re-election.   I was concerned over the past week that President Obama would not win, and my husband and I were worried about what kind of future our daughter would have in America; an America without support for public education, access to healthcare and too eager to go to war. I was concerned that the same people who ran the Bush administration and got us into the Iraq fiasco would be calling the shots again. My conservative friends who complain about the ‘welfare state’ are the same ones benefiting from all these programs and would be hard …

This annoying Op-Ed is a perfect example of the animosity fostered between Americans. It is a shame that we can't disagree on issues without being petty and offensive. I think this Op-Ed written in a manner that is gloating rather than gracious in victory. It seems to be aimed at the people whose candidate lost the election. That is a terrible way to celebrate your victory. Interesting, isn't it…   more ›

Speak Out: How Do You Rate the President's Speech?

Who had the best speech of the Democratic National Convention? Do you rate the president's speech as the best, or not? Take our poll or comment.

President Barack Obama may have had to change his location -- shutting out thousands of people from seeing him live -- but inside the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C., he still captured the devotion of many. He accepted the Democratic Party's nomination, and then went on to tell the American people that he's done much to get the country back on track, leading with the federal assistance to automakers. And, there's a key difference with before and now, he added: "I'm no longer just a candidate; I'm the president." -- Did you like the president's speech? Did it make a connection with you? Let us know in the comment section. -- Since he's been in office, the president said jobs have been created, trade agreements signed that benefit…

Delegate's Diary: Day 2, on Former President Bill Clinton

In a nearly 50-minute speech, former President Bill Clinton kept the audience enraptured, including a local Georgia delegate from Lilburn.

Ilene Johnson, one of Georgia's delegates to the Democratic National Convention, said former President Bill Clinton's speech certainly was successful. In a quick email to Patch, she said: "Clinton’s speech was amazing. The place was packed to the rafters, and hardly anybody was in the hallways when he was talking." -- Read other articles related to Ilene Johnson as a delegate by clicking here. -- She, along with several other delegates are participating in the state's "delegate diaries," and posting updates about her experiences. And, in today's posting, Johnson noted that she didn't get to write one about her first day, as she was "dead on my feet" from all the festivities and just four hours of sleep. Although exhausted, after hearing …

Poll: Did Clinton's Speech Help President Obama?

Former President Bill Clinton gave a rousing speech -- as evidenced by a cheering and chanting crowd. But, did it do its job?

Democrats wrapped up a second day of the national convention in Charlote, N.C., on Sept. 5. The keynote speaker was former President Bill Clinton. Clinton and President Barack Obama have not always gotten along - take four years ago, for example. Then, Hillary Clinton wanted to be president, too, and there was a fiery battle to the nomination. Nowadays, Clinton is behind Obama. And, he got a few comedic jabs to the Republican Party just to make sure it was clear. "People ask me all the time how we delivered four surplus budgets," he said in a prepared statement. "What new ideas did we bring? I always give a one-word answer: arithmetic." His speech lifted the audience to its feet a number of times and had them chanting "four more years, …

Lilburn Delegate Ilene Johnson: 'We Loved Michelle'

The Georgia delegation is quite busy at the Democratic National Convention.

Ilene Johnson, a local delegate from the Lilburn area, is having a fun-filled, yet informative time at the Democratic National Convention this week. Already, she's attended several formal events, done quite a bit of walking, and listened to First Lady Michelle Obama's heartfelt message to Americans about her husband -- the president. (Check out her delegate diary about her experiences, including a big shindig were Johnson said that "it was fun to see all my friends in their finest. I usually see most of these folks sweaty from canvassing or at state party meetings." The convention is now in its second official day. Tonight's must-watch speaker is former President Bill Clinton. In a quick email to Lilburn-Mountain Park, Johnson had this to …

Lilburn Delegate Ready, Elated to Represent Gwinnett Democrats

Ilene Johnson is looking forward to her time as delegate to the national convention this week and re-electing President Barack Obama.

Ilene Johnson had some serious shopping to do for the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., this week. A swim coach for many years, the Lilburn resident had a lot of outfits for the water, but not a lot of outfits for nice events. She picked out a gown, got some good walking shoes, and other clothing necessities for the big moment. "That's been an adventure itself," she said once recent morning while eating pistachios at Alcove coffee shop in Lilburn. "I have to buy real clothes." Elected in April as local Gwinnett County delegate, this is Johnson's first time going to a Democratic National Convention. When she won the seat, Johnson said she couldn't believe it. During the voting, Johnson said there were 10 women running for …
