Police to Increase Presence at Gwinnett County Schools

In light of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT, Gwinnett County Police announced Friday they will be stepping up patrols at schools in Lawrenceville and throughout the county.

On Friday afternoon, Gwinnett County Police Department Cpl. Edwin Ritter released the following statement in response to the tragic school shooting in Newtown, CT: "In light of the horrific mass shooting at the elementary school in Connecticut, the Gwinnett County Police Department will be conducting increased police patrols in and around the schools within Gwinnett County. These increased patrols will a joint effort with the Gwinnett County School Police and Uniformed Officers with the Gwinnett County Police Department. Officers will be assigned to every school within Gwinnett County Police Jurisdiction and these patrols will last for the next several days. Gwinnett County Students Surpass State in 2012 CRCT Results

The 2011-2012 CRCT results are in, and Gwinnett County students exceed state averages.

Gwinnett County's students continue to surpass their peers across the state in the Georgia's Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, or CRCT. According to a press release from Gwinnett County Public Schools, students' mean scores were above the state averages in all content areas -- reading, language arts, math, science and social students -- at all grade levels. For those meeting or exceeding standards, Gwinnett County test-takers did better than their peers, as well. The highest level -- Level 3 -- also saw more Gwinnett County students than their counterparts in nearly every subject, the district press release said. Parkview Students Rank High On National Spanish Exam

4 of the 10 GCPS Students earning top scores are from Parkview High

 In a press release Monday, The Gwinnett County Board of Education announced that it will honor 10 Gwinnet students for their accomplishments on the 2012 National Spanish Exam. Four students placed First in Georgia; three are from Parkview. There were six 2nd Place winners with one being from Parkview. Parkview Student Wins Two Awards for Science Research

Cory Bhowmik brings home Gold and Bronze from the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

In a press release dated June 6, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) announced that Aprotim “Cory” Bhowmik, a 15-year old rising 11th grader from Parkview high, came home with two medals with his project titled Arterial Hemodynamics in Atherosclerosis. He won in  Medicine and Health Sciences category at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, an international event that was held in Pittsburgh in Mid-May.  He was selected for the following two special awards: The American Physiological Society’s (APS) 1st Award Grand Awards: Medicine and Health Sciences - Presented by Intel, 3rd Award Cory was one of three Gwinnett students invited to compete at the international competition after earning first place at the state level event…

Parkview Sophomore Earns Highest Score on National French Exam

Or should we say: "Étudiant en deuxième année Parkview gagne plus de points sur l'examen national français"?

Three French students from Gwinnett County Public Schools earned Georgia’s top score on the National French Exam, scoring 1st and 2nd Statewide. Melissa Kyelem, a sophomore at Parkview High, had the highest score in Georgia on the Level 3C National French Exam and placed first at the National level. She will be honored in the June 21 meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education along with Saritha Mangones, a Sophomore at Brookwood High, and Ndeye Mobodji, a rising sophomore at Collins Hill. In a press release dated May 31, GCPS says that 61 other Gwinnett students ranked in the Top 10 in the state and 47 of those ranked in the Top 10 Nationally.

2012-2013 School Year Brings New Principal to Berkmar High

Gwinnett County Board of Education announces new leadership for four schools

Due to retirements and the transitioning of current principals to other positions within the system, four new approvals were announced after a specially called Gwinnett County School Board meeting on May 24. As of June 1, 2012, Dr. Michael Zinn will assume leadership responsibilities at Berkmar, replacing Principal Ken Johnson who is moving to Archer High to replace retiring Dr. Charles Buchanan. GCPS Provides Class of 2012 Roundup

The Gwinnett County Public Schools Senior Report states that 9,843 seniors are on track to graduate next week.

This year’s graduating class from Gwinnett County Public Schools is larger than ever with 2,050 Honor Graduates posting a grade percent average of 90 or better. GCPS CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks, says, “As a community, we can be proud of these students and what they have achieved during their academic careers.” Brookwood High will graduate their largest class to date with 779 students. Peachtree Ridge High has 757 graduates and Mill Creek High has 714. Gwinnett County Online Campus, which opened as a full time charter school during 2012-2013 has 12 students representing their first graduation class. Lilburn Seniors Receive Numerous Scholarships

Seniors from Parkview and Berkmar are rewarded for academic excellence.

The following scholarships were awarded to Parkview and Berkmar seniors according to a series of press releases from Gwinnett County Public Schools. Hispanic Scholarship Fund scholarships The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) recently announced that 30 Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) students are the 2012 recipients of the organization’s Georgia Opportunities Scholarship. The 28 current seniors and two 2011 graduates represent nine of the district’s traditional high schools and a charter school. GCPS Faces Unique Budget Challenges

The state's largest school system must deal with situations that other organizations do not.

It's not just the declining property tax digest in Gwinnett County that causes budget headaches for the Gwinnett public school system (GCPS). The system has unique funding challenges, including its own positive reputation. For instance: For 2013, GCPS officials had to overcome an $89 million revenue shortfall to balance the budget, and for 2012, it was over $100 million. The schools use a "rolling budget" process to allow for seamless, year-to-year planning. However, Cost, the CFO, said he is not comfortable with estimating a revenue-shortfall figure for FY 2014. However, a continued decline in property tax revenue from the county is still expected, and Cost said that it still might be 2-3 years before the situation bottoms out. In the …

GCPS to Cut Jobs, Increase Class Sizes

Moves part of an effort to address an $89 million budget shortfall.

Gwinnett County Public Schools will eliminate 54 vacant central-office positions and release some other employees as it copes with an $89 million revenue shortfall for fiscal year 2013. “Not a single option we are considering to balance next year’s budget is a ‘good’ one," said GCPS Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks in a released statement. The way cuts were made concerning salaries was the displacement process. X amount of people retired, or left for whatever reasons. Schools eliminated positions and those left without a job were shuffled around to fill the vacant ones. I know. I was displaced a year ago and filled a vacant spot.
