Stars Soar Into Baseball Semifinals

Providence Christian routes King's Ridge 12-2 to advance in Class A playoffs.

Providence Christian kept its offensive foot on the pedal Wednesday in beating King's Ridge to advance in the Class A baseball playoffs. The Stars, who scored 28 runs in the first game of the series, pounded out 14 hits and scored in every inning to beat the Tigers 12-2 and win the deciding third game in the quarterfinal series. Nick Stidman started the onslaught with a first-inning grand slam home run and he finished it in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single that scored Austin Smith, resulting in the game being called due to the 10-run mercy rule. Christin Stewart hit his fourth home run of the series, a two-run shot in the second inning that scored Austin Lloyd, who finished the game 4-for-4 with two RBIs. The homer also was …

Edwin Arias had two doubles hit the centerfield wall and got hit by two pitches to reach base all four at-bats. Panthers Win, Reach State Quarterfinal

Parkview beats North Gwinnett 11-4 in deciding game of second-round series.

Parkview finished off North Gwinnett Thursday, beating the Bulldogs 11-4 to win the best-of-three Class AAAAA baseball playoff series two games to one. The win propels the three-time state champions to the state quarterfinals for the first time since 2005, when they reached the semifinals. Next up for the Panthers (23-8) will be Luella in a best-of-three series that begins with a Tuesday doubleheader at Parkview. The third game, if necessary, will be Wednesday, also at Parkview. Parkview looked uneasy early Thursday as North Gwinnett put up early runs in the first inning. But if the two games played on Wednesday (an 11-10 win by Parkview and a 5-4 win by North Gwinnett) proved anything, it was that either team could rally from behind to …

Providence Outlasts George Walton

Stars advance to the Class A quarterfinals with 15-10 win.

Providence Christian baseball coach Adam Cantrell might have had a flashback when his Stars took a 5-0 lead over George Walton Academy Thursday in the deciding game of their best-of-three playoff series. In 2009, Providence split two games with Landmark Christian and led 5-0 in the third game only to lose. History didn't repeat this time. Providence pounded out 18 hits and outlasted George Walton to win 15-10 and advance to next week's Class A quarterfinals to play King's Ridge, a team the Stars beat twice during the regular season. Providence jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the top of the first inning as Tyler Brown led off with a double, Austin Loyd singled and Christin Stewart singled to score the first run off George Walton starter Trey…
