A Kentucky boy accidentally shot his 2-year-old sister to death with a gun he got for his birthday.
Two-year-old Caroline Sparks loved playing outside, singing, and her 5-year-old brother, who accidentally shot her to death last week with the .22-caliber rifle he got for his birthday. CNN reports the children's mother had stepped outside for just a few minutes when the accident occurred. It was the third time in about a month that someone was shot to death by a child under 6. The boy's gun was a Crickett rifle marketed specifically for young children as "my first rifle," the CNN story said. The gun stocks come in colors such as pink and blue. On Jan. 31, a teen shooter brought a gun on to the campus of Atlanta's Price Middle School and shot a student. Parents there are enraged. So, we're asking are you concerned about safety at Gwinnett County schools?
Last week's shooting at an Atlanta middle school certainly upset parents in that school district, but it also may have piqued your concern. In that incident, a 14-year-old boy was sent to the hospital after a bullet grazed his neck. He was released later that day. And, a 15-year-old was arrested and charged in what police are calling a "gang-related" shooting, according to media reports. Since then, angry parents have questioned the operation of metal detectors and overall security at the school. At a recent school board meeting, APS Director of Security Marquenta Sands said that they are looking at "advanced technology" to keep children safe, according to an AJC report. America is still reeling from the recent shooting in Sandy Hook, CT, that killed 20 students and 6 educators. One can only imagine how their families continue to cope with their loss, or how the rest of us make it every day after such a watershed event. Some suggest more prayer, while others say more gun control. Whatever it is, lord, give us more of it-we sure need it. One suggestion is to arm educators. To some, this is not as absurd as it seems. After all, teachers are already on the front lines in facing overcrowded classrooms, gang violence, and now armed intruders. Loaded guns might seem a helpful solution to the problem. However, it could also increase violence if their weapons fall into the wrong hands. One shudders to think about …

When it comes to protecting our families, are guns a safe option?
We are lucky to live in a calm area, one where neighborhoods are quiet and with relatively low crime. As I read the police blotter every week I notice that our crime here in Lilburn usually consists of shoplifting, fraud, and theft. Occasionally there is a home invasion or store being robbed at gunpoint. Obviously, no person or community is immune to crime. If we become victims of such crimes, how do we protect ourselves? We could wait for the local police department, but I can tell you from personal experience, the response isn’t always fast enough. Should these situations arise we may be better off putting our self-defense in our own hands. Protecting our selves and families is our duty, but some forms of protection can be a danger as …
