Gwinnett Sheriff's Office Installs 'Big White Box'

Citizens are encouraged to dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are out of date or not needed any more.

The Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department has installed a “Big White Box” in the lobby of the jail to help citizens properly dispose of prescription and over-the-counter drugs that are out of date or not needed any more. Prescription drug abuse among all age groups is currently being reported by law enforcement agencies across the state and country as a real and growing danger, according to Lt. Sean Smith, public information officer for the Gwinnett Sheriff’s Office, in a news release. In addition, unsafe disposal of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications is costly to our environment and, therefore, to our health, he said. Adding to the local and national discussion on guns, Gwinnett Sheriff Butch Conway has released a statement in support of citizens' right to legally use firearms. "I encourage all law abiding citizens to acquire and maintain the skills to safely carry a firearm in order to protect themselves and others," the statement reads. Conway issued the statement under the heading 'The 2nd Amendment." The U.S Constitution's Second Amendment says, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Authorities Capture Fugitive in Alpharetta

The wanted man turned himself into Forsyth County deputies Thursday afternoon. In addition to Cobb and Forsyth counties, the suspect is also wanted in Gwinnett County.

A 45-year-old man, wanted by at least three counties on various charges, turned himself into authorities Thursday afternoon at a location in Alpharetta. Kennie Askew, of Lithonia, was arrested by the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Unit at approximately 2 p.m., a press release stated. Capt. Tim House of the FCSO said earlier in the week that Askew was wanted by authorities in Cobb County for traffic violations and in Gwinnett County for probation violation. In Forsyth County, Askew has been charged with obstructing law enforcement officers and driving with a suspended license after fleeing from a city of Milton police officer in the Bridle Ridge subdivision located off Highway 141 in south Forsyth Tuesday night. Gwinnett Sheriff's Employee Charged with Having Sex with Inmate, Report Says

The employee was arrested Wednesday and charged with violation of oath and sexual assault, wsbtv.com reported

Duone Clark, an employee at the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, was arrested Wednesday night after allegations that he had sexual activity with an inmate in the county's custody wsbtv.com reported. Clark was charged with violation of oath by a public officer and sexual assault, the report said. An investigation is ongoing after enough evidence was secured for an arrest. Clark has since resigned from the sheriff's office, the report said. Clark is a Lilburn resident, according to the booking by the sheriff's office.

Gwinnett Deputy Arrested for DUI

Melvin Robinson Jr. placed on administrative leave following June 26 arrest.

A Gwinnett County Sheriff’s deputy is on administrative leave following a June 26 arrest for driving under the influence. A Gwinnett County Police officer stopped Melvin Robinson Jr., 40, of Dacula, on Fence Road near Highway 316 after observing Robinson driving well below the posted limit, weaving, crossing a solid white line and nearly striking a curb. According to the police report, a caller reported seeing a black GMC Denali drive in a circle on I-85 northbound, north of Pleasant Hill Road. The caller advised the vehicle was traveling very slowly and weaving “all over the road.” The caller provided police with the vehicle tag number. The tag number returned to a vehicle registered to Robinson. After seeing Robinson’s address on the …
