There were no injuries in the Thursday morning incident.

A gas leak forced Gwinnett fire officials to evacuate business owners and employees from a strip mall near Lake Lucerne early Tuesday morning. The location runs along U.S. Highway 78 between Ross Road and Lake Lucerne Road, near both Lilburn and Snellville. A gas line was inadvertently struck while workers from the Department of Water Resources installed a new water main, according to a press release. Update: Fire Destroys Home on Tom Smith Road in Lilburn

A family of three and their dog escaped unharmed from a blaze that totally destroyed their home on Tom Smith Road.

Updated 10:45 a.m. A family escaped unharmed from a blaze that destroyed their home overnight on the 800 block of Tom Smith Road. Firefighters responded to a call just before midnight, and the blaze was so intense by the time they arrived that it could be battled only from the outside, Captain Tommy Rutledge of Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services said. Owner Donna Bryson said she had been asleep when the smell of smoke awoke her about 11:45 p.m. Sunday. Seeing smoke coming from around the fireplace, she quickly aroused her husband and son, and they left the house immediately. "Within five or 10 minutes, the whole roof opened up and the whole house was just an inferno," Bryson said. The house, featured in a recent Lilburn-Mountain Park …

Squirrel Causes Power Outage for 5,000 Lilburn Residents

Berkmar High School was evacuated briefly as a precautionary measure.

A squirrel was the cause of power failure for about 5,000 Lilburn area residents Thursday morning. The rodent got into Georgia Power's substation, causing an outage for about an hour, a spokeswoman for the utility said. Berkmar High School was evacuated as a precautionary measure after school staff reported a faint smell of smoke from the ninth grade wing after the power was off, Gwinnett Fire Department spokesman Tommy Rutledge said. "Firefighters checked the building and found no signs of heat, smoke or fire," Rutledge said in an email. "The power came back on as firefighters were there and they conducted a second check and still found nothing." It's not clear whether the outage and the smoke smell were related, Rutledge said. Berkmar …

Gwinnett Police Chief Raises Alarm on Turnover

Both the police and fire department are holding positions unfilled.

Gwinnett County Police Chief Charles Walters isn't asking for any new officers in the coming fiscal year, but he told county officials Wednesday that he would be "remiss" if he didn't note recent turnover in the department. Speaking to county government leaders Wednesday in Lawrenceville, Walters said 13 officers had quit since July "for financial reasons." The chief produced plenty of data showing how increased officer visibility has caused crime reductions in the county. But he noted that if the turnover trend continues, "the tide will turn shortly." Gwinnett Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash, among those participalting in the second day of review sessions for the 2012 budget, said officer turnover is "on the list of things we have to …

Storm Causes Damage in Lilburn

Trees, wires downed by Friday's thunderstorm.

The strong storm that moved through the area kept Gwinnett firefighters on their toes Friday night. According to Gwinnett Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge, crews responded to trees down on three houses around 8:30 p.m. Rutledge said a tree and wires were reported down around 8:30 p.m. on a house on the 4300 block of Hale Drive. No injuries were reported, but limbs broke through the roof and allowed water to enter from the rain. At 8:41 p.m., trees and wires were reported down on two residences at 787 and 797 Killian Hill Road, according to Rutledge. Two pine trees split and fell on one of the homes, allowing water from the rain to get into the house. On the other house, the limbs of one tree punched through the roof. No injuries were …

Fire Displaces Lilburn Family of Five

Lightning was the cause of a house fire on Remington Court.

A house fire caused by lightning Monday evening displaced a Lilburn family of five, including a special-needs boy. Fikri Erdem said his home on the 5000 block of Remington Court, inside the Lilburn city limits, shook from the thunder when an intense lightning storm moved through the area around 7 p.m. The resulting fire burned through the roof of the single-story home, located in the area near Hood Road and Lawrenceville Highway. A fast response from firefighters limited most of the damage to the attic, according to Gwinnett Fire spokesman Capt. Tommy Rutledge. The main-level living area of the home received smoke and water damage. Firefighters were dispatched at 7:16 p.m., according to Rutledge, following a 911 call from the homeowner.  “…
