Parkview wins Boys County Swim Championship

Lady Panthers take third.

The Parkview Panthers knew everyone else was gunning for them, but that didn't keep them from winning the Gwinnett County boys swimming championship Saturday at the West Gwinnett Aquatics Center in Norcross. Parkview's girls were third. "We have been on top quite a bit," said Parkview head coach Jack Gayle. "It's a great meet and I am proud of the way it turned out." The Panthers boys won the title with a total of 949 points; second-place Collins Hill had 844. Brookwood won the girls title with 1,076 points; Parkview had 725 points. "Gwinnett in general has been on top as there are a lot of [good] teams from the county," said Gayle. Berkmar Boys Face Important Stretch of Region Games

Next three games are against teams at the top of the 8-AAAAA standings.

The most important stretch of the season begins Friday night for the Berkmar High boys basketball team. The Patriots (11-5, 5-3 in Region 8-AAAAA) have been on a hot streak since mid-December, winning eight of their last nine games, and haven’t lost in almost a month. But things get a whole lot more important in the next week. Beginning with Friday night’s home game against No. 3 South Gwinnett, Berkmar plays three straight games against the region’s best teams. How the Patriots do between now and then will go a long way in determining where they’ll be seeded come playoff time. The biggest test is Friday. Providence Christian Coach Ivan Iverson getting results

Stars' second-year coach has team state-ranked so far.

When accomplished head coaches urge you to become one, that's a sign you should. That's why Ivan Iverson, an assistant basketball coach for six years at Norcross' Greater Atlanta Christian, became head coach at Lilburn's Providence Christian two seasons ago. Iverson said he was urged into head coaching by colleagues including GAC coach Eddie Martin and Providence baseball coach Adam Cantrell. Both are among the most highly regarded coaches in the state. "I felt I was ready for it a few years earlier, actually," Iverson of interviewing initially at Chapel Hill, before learning of Providence's opening.
