Locals and residents are allowed to comment on the proposed budget to the mayor and council at two public hearings on May 28 and June 10.
The city of Lilburn is holding two public hearings on its proposed budget for the 2013-2014 fiscal year. The Lilburn city council meeting for May on Monday (May 13) covered a number of agenda items. Here's a recap of the highlights: -The Lilburn City Council denied 3-0 the application for an alcohol license to serve beer at Bella's Banquet Hall, located at 4800 Lawrenceville Hwy. In the work session, the council and Lilburn Police Chief Bruce Hedley discussed how the business is unfit to have the privilege of serving alcohol since the Bella's has had four reported alcohol-related incidents in the last two years, those of which involved underage drinking and even gunshots fired. The city of Lilburn is down one council member, and may not reach a quorum for its April meeting.
Update March 28, 11:50 a.m.: Dr. Scott Batterton and Mayor Johnny Crist are expected to be out of town on April 8, according to the city clerk. ---------- Officials have announced that the city of Lilburn is cancelling the April 8 meeting because there may not be enough people present to vote. A notice sent to the media indicates that the meeting was called off "due to the potential lack of a quorum." "Regular meeting schedule for the second Monday of each month will resume on May 13, 2013," it read. Among other things, the April meeting was supposed to include a city update by the mayor. Councilman Thomas Wight is taking a six-month sabbatical to hike the Pacific Crest Trail.
Updated March 14, 6:30 p.m.: We asked the city of Lilburn regarding leaves of absence of elected officials. And, according to City Manager Bill Johnsa: "The City Charter does not address a prolonged absence or mandate regarding attendance. The City Boards and Commissions have attendance requirements that do not pertain to elected officials." ------------ A little over a year into his council post, Thomas Wight has decided it's time to take a break. According to city spokeswoman Nikki Young, the Lilburn councilman is taking a six-month sabbatical to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. The decision was made public on March 12 in a press release. Youth Art Month Proclamation March 2013 will celebrated as Youth Art Month in the city of Lilburn. All citizens are encouraged to support art educational experiences for all children. In part, the proclamation read: "We hold the arts programs in our schools to be essential and viable academic endeavors, for art education develops self-esteem, appreciation of the work of others, and critical thinking skills vital to the success of future leaders." The Lilburn City Council met on Monday, Feb. 11, for its monthly work session and regular meeting. Here is a quick run-down of what the major happenings were. 1. Website Redevelopment Contract Lilburn City Council passed authorized a contract with Kansas-based CivicPlus. The vote was 3-1, with Thomas Wight opposed. The contract is for a total not to exceed $32,262. This includes $24,296 for redesigning the website, and $3,983 for website hosting. The city will pay approximately $10,754 in equal payments over three years. In addition to the above work, CivicPlus also has agreed to redesign the website a second time at the end of their three-year contract. There were 12 companies who submitted proposals for redesign of the city's website. …

I have a suggestion for the community garden. The areas between the garden plots are being filled with rock gravel. However, wood chips would be equally useful for this purpose. The wood chips are free from our Lilburn City chipping program. The wood chips are also much more friendly to the environment.
