In the final installment of Liburn Relay Rally participants' stories, Jack Staples and Jill Mathis -- brother and sister -- share how cancer has affected their family, and what newly diagnosed patients should remember.
For siblings Jack Staples and Jill Mathis, cancer was nearly an inevitable truth. Staples was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. He lost his wife, Karen, to breast cancer in 2002. Mathis was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006. Another sister, Bobbie, is undergoing radiation treatment at the moment for breast cancer. There's been aunts, uncles and other family members to be diagnosed with cancer, as well. That's a lot for one family. "It's kind of personal to us," Mathis said, "and, we'd like to see a cure. In the second part of a three-part series, Patch talks to community members touched by cancer. Today we remember Jonny Williamson.
More than two years ago, on Thanksgiving Day, Jonny Williamson passed away -- stricken with colon cancer. The 32-year-old head girls soccer coach at Providence Christian Academy was loved and respected by many. To honor his memory, girls in the school's soccer program participate in the Lilburn Relay Rally. They are "Team Williamson." The name is emblazoned on bright pink T-shirts. It's the least -- they believe -- that they can do. Back in 2010, the girls knew he was battling health issues. He already had told them about his battle with Crohn's disease. "When he started getting sicker, he was pretty open about what was going on with him," said Allie Petmecky, 17, a senior at Providence Christian Academy. "And, when he was in the hospital…

When you meet Quinn Gibson, his playfulness belies his very serious health condition. He's 5. He plays. He runs. He tosses sticks down sewers. And, he has cancer -- neuroblastoma. Quinn was diagnosed November 10, six days after his baby brother Dylan was born. The baby was born a month early, and then admitted to the the neonatal intensive care unit. So, Quinn's parents -- Mark and Dmetria Gibson -- said they didn't have time to be angry and confused. They had to deal with it head on. "We didn't have a choice," said Dmetria Gibson, Quinn's mother. By the 17th of November, Quinn was walking into his first chemotherapy appointment. More than five months later, Quinn is still in the thick of treatments. Religious faith is helping the family…
