Superior Roofing company of Lilburn and roofing materials supplier CRS donated the materials and labor for a new roof for an elderly Lilburn woman who had been scammed.
One of the things Superior Roofing owner Ron Herring says he tries to live by is an instruction from the Bible: "Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act." So when a supply company contacted him about reroofing, at no charge, the house of an elderly Lilburn woman who had been conned by another contractor, Herring didn't hesitate. Superior Roofing, also based in Lilburn, provided the labor, and the supply company CRS provided the materials. Normally, Herring would have charged about $8,000 to put a new roof on that house. "I couldn't believe anyone would be so nice as to do all this for free, for a stranger, but they did," said Joyce Skipwitch as the workers were finishing up her new roof. A year ago, …
New Balance and Girls on the Run provide Minor Elementary girls with shoes in running program.
Two groups of Minor Elementary girls were fitted for tennis shoes Wednesday by New Balance shoes. The groups of 15 will participate in the nationwide Girls on the Run program. Their ultimate goal is to run a 3.1 mile event in November. Smiles as bright as the sun shined in Minor’s music room as the girls pulled their shoes on tight, laced them up, and admired the color and feel of them. They jumped, jogged in place, and tested out their new shoes. “The girls are so excited to get their shoes,” said Lori Laws, a kindergarten teacher at Minor. The Girls on the Run program provides shoes and training at no cost to students in low-income communities. The subsidies allow for children to participate regardless their financial situation. “A lot …

Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen, which provides pet food for owners who can't afford it, is planning to move its headquarters to Lilburn.
Daffy's Pet Soup Kitchen, a nonprofit organization that provides pet food for owners who can't afford it, plans to move its headquarters to Lilburn from its current Lawrenceville location. "We're hoping everything will be up and running by the end of October," said founder Tom Wargo. The Daffy's franchise is one of the largest nonprofit pet food banks in the nation for dogs, cats and other pets, according to Wargo. Daffy's also directs people to spay and neuter centers that offer services at a discount, and it assists pets in natural disaster situations, such as this year's tornado through Northwest Georgia. A Lilburn resident for nine years, Wargo started the pet food bank in 1997, out of his own truck and under his nonprofit, the SOS …

Young was among three from the county to be honored by the association. Dorothy Parker-Jarrett, principal at Summerour Middle School, was named State Counseling Advocate of the Year, and Dianne Thompson, director of advisement and counseling, was named State Counseling Supervisor of the year. The association took "note of the support and guidance" the three provide to the county's public schools, GCPS spokesman Jorge Quintana said in an emailed announcement. Three Gwinnett educators won the awards last year, Quintana said. Young and Parker-Jarrett earlier this year were named at the county …
Early detection and treatment could eliminate the need for surgery later in life.
Dozens of volunteers including City Councilman Tim Dunn, members of the Lilburn Woman’s Club, members of the Harmony Grove UMC and others arrived at the Lilburn Middle School (LMS) media center Friday to receive training from Dru Whiteneck, RN and Jeri Jones, RN, in accordance with Gwinnett County Public Health guidelines. Georgia law mandates that scoliosis screening occur twice during sixth to eighth grade, and in order to meet these requirements for thousands of students, school administrators rely heavily on volunteers from around the community. Scoliosis is a relatively rare medical condition in which a person’s spine is curved from side to side rather than straight up and down. There is no known cause or cure at this time, so the …
