Parkview's Matt Olson Picked by the A's

The Panthers' star pitcher/first baseman was selected by Oakland on the first day of the Major League Baseball Draft.

Matt Olson, who led Parkview High School to the Class AAAAA baseball championship a week and a half ago, was selected on the first day of the Major League Baseball Draft Monday. The 6-foot-4, 236-pound pitcher/first baseman, who has committed to play at Vanderbilt, was the 47th pick overall by the Oakland Athletics. Olson, a left-handed batter, was a key ingredient in the Panthers' runs to the last two state championships. He was the Game 1 winning pitcher and hit a game-deciding home run in the second game in Parkview’s sweep of Brookwood in the state finals on May 26. "For us, one of the best high school bats in the country -- just a very skilled hitter with strength, and the power's going to come as he gets bigger and stronger," Oakland…

Updated story, 12 a.m. It shouldn't be any surprise who played a leading role in Parkview High School's encore performance in the state baseball finals. Take a bow, Matt Olson. Parkview's star senior was at his best again Saturday, pitching and slugging the Panthers (31-6) to a 5-2, 6-3 sweep of visiting Brookwood and their second-straight Class AAAAA championship — and fifth overall. Olson, who had plenty of help from his teammates, pitched a complete game and added a two-run home run in the opener, then stroked game-changing two-out home run in the Panthers' final at-bat in Game 2. He was 4-for-7 with three RBIs in the series. "The bigger the situation, the bigger Matt's gonna come through," Parkview Coach Chan Brown said, "and it's been…

Power Hitters Lead Parkview, Providence in Baseball Playoffs

Matt Olson, Christin Stewart spark Panthers, Stars in today's semifinals

Matt Olson looks more the part, Christin Stewart more unassuming. How ever they do it, the junior power hitters are primary reasons their Parkview and Providence Christian baseball teams are in today's best-of-three Class AAAAA and A semifinal series against Colquitt County and Treutlen, respectively. "I'm relaxed at the plate and not pressing myself," Olson said. "When I do that, I can drive the ball. "When I get in my groove, I usually stay in it for a little bit," the 6-foot-5, 230-pounder added. "I'm just trying to help us get the win. As long as we get the win, I don't really care how I do personally." Stewart, who has five home runs in the Stars' dismissals of Glascock County, George Walton Academy and King's Ridge in the first three…
