News Nearby: Man Accused of Sending Explicit Photo, Texts to Meadowcreek Student

Inside the Police Reports: The student's parents told police that the suspect attended the same church as them.

A Norcross man was arrested earlier this month in connection to sending explicit messages via cell phone to a Meadowcreek High student last June. According to the Gwinnett County Police docket book, Jose Rocha-Mata was arrested Feb. 7 on charges of child molestation, terroristic threats and acts, and hold for immigration. In the child molestation incident, the parents of a 14-year-old girl living in Tucker reported to police that Rocha-Mata had sent multiple sexual text messages and a photo of his penis that were intended for their daughter, who attends Meadowcreek. The messages were written in Spanish and sent to the mom's cell phone, but the girl's name was included in the messages. The Meadowcreek High student had been holding onto the …

Parkview, Berkmar Among Georgia's Top 20 Schools

Parkview and Berkmar are "silver medal" level schools in U.S. News & World Report's rankings of the nation's best high schools.

  Parkview and Berkmar high schools are among the top 20 in the state of Georgia in a U.S. News and World Report ranking, and both earned the "silver medal" among schools in the nation. Parkview ranked 14th in the state, while Berkmar was in 17th place in the magazine's rankings. Nationwide, Parkview is No. 703, and Berkmar is No. 778. The report judged each school on its teacher to student ratio, students’ rate of college readiness, and students’ average proficiency in math and English. It calculated values based on student performance on state exit exams and internationally available exams on college-level coursework. Three Gwinnett Schools Identified in Lowest 78 List from DOE

Meadowcreek High School, Gwinnett InterVention Education Center East and Gwinnett InterVention Education Center West will now qualify for state funding to help improve scores.

In accordance with the terms of Georgia’s waiver from No Child Left Behind, the Georgia Department of Education released a list of the 78 worst performing schools in the state. The list identified the state’s “priority” schools - the criteria being those schools that consistently performed poorly on test or with low graduation rates. These schools will qualify for state assistance to help improve student achievements. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, there were 14 metro area schools, three of those in Gwinnett County. The Gwinnett Schools identified were Gwinnett InterVention Education Center East, Gwinnett InterVention Education Center West and Meadowcreek High School. Fire in Woods Behind Meadowcreek High School

The blaze did not cause any disruptions to the school day, according to fire department officials.

Firefighters were dipatched to the scene of a fire in the woods between Meadowcreek High School and Vulcan rock quarry today at 11:10 a.m. Emergency crews remained at the scene until 3:30 p.m., when remaining hot spots were completely wet down, according to a Gwinnett Fire release.  Firefighters found the blaze behind the high school, at 4455 Steve Reynolds Blvd in an unincorporated area of Norcross, on a large hill that is approximately 150 feet tall. "Firefighters were challenged by the difficult terrain and steady winds," wrote Cpt. Tommy Rutledge of Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services in a released statement.  The students were not threatened by the fire, according to the release. Peachtree Ridge Mauls Meadowcreek 55-6

Mustangs barely avoid a shutout by scoring with less than two minutes left in the game.

The Peachtree Ridge Lions nearly shut out the Meadowcreek Mustangs 55-6 Friday night at Meadowcreek. The first half of the game belonged to the Lions. They scored five touchdowns, two safeties and a field goal and ended the half ahead 41-0. The Lions were only able to score two more touchdowns in the second half against a better prepared Mustang defense. Meadowcreek’s offense never gave up, either. With less than 2 minutes remaining in the game they scored a touchdown of their own to prevent a shutout.   Peachtree Ridge improved to 3-1 while Meadowcreek's record fell to 0-4.

GCPS Gives Go Ahead to Digital Learning System

Digital content system eCLASS will be introduced as teaching tool in 2012 pilot program to five high schools.

The digital age has certainly changed the way we live, and soon it will be altering the way teachers teach and students learn. GCPS officials gave the go-ahead Thursday night with plans to introduce eCLASS, a digital system designed to help teachers offer new ways to present lessons and enhance students' ability to learn. Beginning next fall five area high schools, Archer, Berkmar, Duluth, North Gwinnett and Shiloh will participate in a pilot program. GCPS board members approved a four-year $20.8 million contract with Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the company that will provide the educational software. GCPS superintendent Alvin Wilbanks said the school board had been reviewing and studying the idea of offering the new teaching and learning …

Welch Named Interim Meadowcreek Principal

Gwinnett School announced that Tommy Welch will serve as the interim principal of Meadowcreek High School. The appointment was effective Friday.  The county Board of Education called a special meeting to make the decision, which comes in the wake of Principal Bob Jackson's death on Monday.  CEO/Superintendant J. Alvin Wilbanks made the recommendation, and the Board approved.  Welch began his Gwinnett teaching career as a social studies teacher at the school in 2003. He moved into the assistant principal role in 2006, where he has remained since.  Welch holds both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Buffalo. He has attended Piedmont College for his specialist's degree and is currently pursuing a doctorate in philosophy …

Meadowcreek Principal Jackson Dies

The respected educator passed away Monday afternoon after leaving work ill.

Meadowcreek High School principal Ladeadrick "Bob" Jackson died Monday afternoon.  He fell ill while working at the Norcross-area school, according to Gwinnett Schools spokesperson Jorge Quintana. The school called 911 and he was taken to a local hospital, where he later passed away, according to GCPS. Nothing else is known about the cause of his death.  "He will be sorely missed, and especially by the Meadowcreek High School community," said Gwinnett Schools CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks in a statement. "He made his mark as a teacher, assistant principal and principal, and those of us who were fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with him can only wish for more educators like Bob Jackson," Wilbanks said, praising Jackson …
