Parkview High's Khalil Shakur Wins State Wrestling Championship

Khalil Shakur is Parkview High's first state champion since 2008.

Going into the evening, Khalil Shakur already was ranked No. 1 in the state, and when he hit the mat for the championship match Saturday, he made sure there was no doubt. Shakur, a senior at Parkview High School and captain of the wrestling team, placed first in the final championship round -- making him the first state wrestling champion at the school since 2008, according to the team's Twitter account.  After the win, Shakur tweeted: "Thanks to anyone that helped me win a state title this year, coaches, drill partners, friends. I couldn't have done it without you guys!!" Weighing in at 160 pounds, the Class AAAAAA wrestler was one of three Parkview High wrestlers to place in the championship round, according to the team. Girls' Wrestling Gaining Interest

This school year Parkview High School has had a girl wrestling on the team, making the school one of just a few to have female students participating in this traditionally male sport.

When Christina Kruger steps on the mat, she tries to forget the obvious -- that she's the only girl around. But, it's not exactly something that she can avoid. She's a trailblazer, albeit a reluctant one. In the 2012-2013 school year, Christina has been the only female wrestler on the Parkview High team. Like other girls across the nation, she found her way to what has been a traditionally male sport. "Once you're out on the mat it's just like you're so focused on what you're trying to do that you don't really even think about," Christina said about being a female wrestler.
