Pat Gabilondo to be Installed as New Lilburn Woman's Club President

A longtime resident will soon be the new president of the Lilburn Woman's Club. Patch talks to her about her goals and love of Lilburn.

Pat Gabilondo, a consummate community volunteer, will be diving into a new role as the next president of the Lilburn Woman's Club. This will be Gabilondo's first term as president, and she will be installed on Feb. 7. Laurie Wexel is the outgoing president. Gabilondo, whose family has lived in Lilburn for more than 21 years, first started attending Lilburn Woman's Club meetings in 2009, and became a full member by February of the next year. Her first responsibility was to assist Patti-Jo Shapiro with the club’s public relations. Shapiro died in 2011, and Gabilondo paid tribute to her in Patch, and many other ways. "We made a great team, and she was a passionate teacher," Gabilondo said. In 2011, Gabilondo continued on as the club’s …

Asheville: Great for a Quick R&R

I would describe Asheville and the first thing that came to my mind is dog-friendly, artsy place with a touch of European influence

It will take at least one or more overnight stays to be comfortable, but hubby and I just recently took a few days R&R and drove up to Asheville (with an e), N.C. We left the house a little after 7 a.m. and arrived in time for lunch at a friendly little bistro off of Haywood Street.  Asheville’s most coveted tourist attraction is the Biltmore Estate and just a word of caution, the entrance fee is now a bit pricey at $59 per adult ticket, but it’s the American version of a European castle and sits on thousand of acres of manicured gardens. It will take you several hours of touring the home and grounds but worth the fee at least once so that you can ooh and aah over the grandeur in which the Vanderbilts lived in the 1890’s before all the …

I love Asheville! We spent our 20 wedding anniversary there last year and barely had enough time to visit all the unique shops, art galleries, bookstores and bistros that town has to offer. Must plan to go back soon.   more ›

Fresh Recipe For Light Summertime Dessert

Make the most of your fresh Farmer’s Market produce.

Summer is generally the time of year that we look for lighter and healthier meals – partly because of the intense heat and partly because it’s simply a good idea.   But let’s face it; none of us wants to give up dessert without the fuss of baking. Here’s a wonderful light dessert recipe that incorporates many of the fresh ingredients from your recent visit to the Farmer’s Market.  Farmer’s Market Fruit Salad   1 fresh pineapple, peeled cored and diced 3 fresh Georgia peaches,  peeled and diced 2 cups fresh blueberries, washed 2 crispy red apples, cored and diced   2 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice ½ cup Triple Sec Place all the ingredients into a decorative bowl, trying to capture as much of the natural fruit juice as possible. Be sure …

Here's a Holiday Idea: Get Creative With An Easter Tree

European Easter tradition is making Its way into the South.

What would Easter in America be without the Easter Bunny, decorating and hunting Easter eggs, Easter baskets and those beautiful Easter bonnets for the ladies of all ages?    At my house we have yet another tradition that symbolizes Easter for the family and is well-known in Germany, and that is decorating an Easter tree. Trees embellished with colored eggs started taking hold in the U.S. shortly after the Civil War, but there are still a lot of Americans who aren’t aware of this fun family tradition.   If you have the opportunity to travel through Europe at this time of year you’ll see how many people extend the decorating to evergreen trees outside in their gardens in a similar fashion to how we decorate our trees and lawns for Christmas…

Lilburn Sisters Take Up the Fight Against Scleroderma

Doreen Towhey and Peggy Levengood dedicated to finding cure for disease that took their sister.

In my travels around town, I get to meet people who are passionate about a particular cause, and I’m always inspired by those who are able to turn their concerns and personal struggles into tangible activities that make a positive difference in the lives of others.    Doreen Towhey and Peggy Levengood are two sisters from Lilburn who truly personify the concept of thinking globally and acting locally. In January 2009 Doreen and Peggy lost their sister Kathleen Basile to a devastating form of scleroderma, after a long 9 ½- year struggle coping with the disease.   The word “scleroderma” comes from two Greek words: “sclero” meaning hard, and “derma” meaning skin.  Hardening of the skin is one of the most visible manifestations but it is …

You Say Tomato, I Say Better Boy, Early Girl and Super Sweet 100

What are the best performing tomatoes for your garden?

While I’m usually pretty decisive about most things, facing the endless variety of tomatoes in the garden stores can leave me in a quandary. Yes, it’s time to decide which tomato plants will take up valuable and limited space in my garden this year. I think my dilemma stems from the fact that we Southern gardeners have such different needs from gardeners across the rest of the country. Our plants must be able to withstand and thrive through scorching heat, the most intense humidity and a never-ending proliferation of pests and diseases. Here’s a short list of the top three best performing tomato plants that I’ve grown in my garden over the years: 1.  Better Boy-My all-time favorite for reliable prolific fruit. This one seems to thrive in …

I love Pat's articles - so interesting and varied. All the varieties mentioned are great, but my personal favorite tomato is an heirloom variety called "Mortgage Lifter". I grow it from seed since plants are hard to find. But if you run across it, try at least one you will not be disappointed. I live in Tennessee, and it performs perfectly here. Loves the heat and humidity. I had tomatoes into …   more ›

Easter Baskets, Canned Food Needed for Lilburn Co-Op

Lilburn Woman’s Club donated 65 Easter baskets to the ministry this week.

The Lilburn Woman’s Club donated 65 professionally assembled Easter baskets to the Lilburn Cooperative Ministry this week after holding an Easter Basket workshop for club members. The ladies who participated in the event came to the workshop loaded down with baskets, toys, school and art supplies and enough treats to complete the beautiful array of baskets. According to Laurie Wexel, LWC’s Home Life Program Chair, “The Easter basket workshop was a resounding success. We had 16 members show up, and boy did we make baskets.” All of them were overflowing with goodies for local children in need, but there are still more needed. The Lilburn Cooperative Ministry is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization located at 5329 Five Forks-Trickum Road that …
