Business Spotlight: Zutilla Veterinary Housecalls

In 2011, Dr. Star Gregory opened Zutilla Veterinary Housecalls in Lilburn as a way to provide convenience for pet parents and to reduce animal stress during medical visits.

Caring for animals has long been a passion of Dr. Star Gregory's, and a couple of years ago she opened a mobile veterinary service to pursue her love even further. Zutilla Veterinary Housecalls, based in Lilburn opened in 2011, after Gregory moved to the area with her husband. A Spelman College graduate, Gregory feels right at home in metro Atlanta. She started the business for mainly one reason -- to better the experience of pets, which often see veterinary visits as stressful. The name of the business pays homage to two of her beloved dogs, Zulu (who passed away in 2007) and Atilla. Patch recently followed Gregory around town as she met with clients. Each client said she was just what they, and their pets, needed: someone caring, someone…

Business Spotlight: funnybones for dogs

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about funnybones, a Happy Place for Dogs.

Kenya Newman opened funnybones, a Happy Place for Dogs on Nov. 22, 2004. Originally from California, Newman opened her business after meeting a woman who owned another doggy daycare. According to Newman she was the happiest person she had ever met. After leaving a sports marketing job, Newman decided to strike out on her own and with the help of her father, funnybones was born. I recently sat down with Kenya to talk about her business. Patch: What is the best aspect of owning funnybones? Kenya: There are so many. I guess the autonomy is the best part. If I have an idea I can make it happen. There's no one to check with to get permission. I definitely bounce ideas off of my employees and my dad but ultimately I can do what I want. If I have…

Our Bella is a rescue and is super sensitive and leery of most people but I felt that the socialization at FB would help her trust more and it certainly has. All we have to do is say "you wanta go to Funnybones?" and she starts dancing and smiling. Its true too that we may go several weeks and not take her but as soon as we walk in the door they know her name and make her feel safe and happy! …   more ›

Business Spotlight: Samantha's Grooming

Each week we feature a business from our hometown of Lilburn. This week, learn more about Samantha's Dog Wash.

Samantha Galicia found her love for animals and especially dogs 13 years ago. Galicia realized that her love of dogs could turn a profit and six years ago opened Samantha's Dog Wash. The shop offers a full range of grooming services including washes, styling, teeth brushing, ear cleaning and nail clipping. I recently sat down with Samantha to talk about her business. Patch: What is the best aspect of owning Samantha's Dog Wash? Samantha: The best aspect is that I get to bring my children to work with me and I get to set my own hours. I get to be the one to set the rules basically. Patch: What is the most challenging aspect of owning your own grooming shop? Samantha: Trying to do all of the paperwork and doing the numbers. It's a lot for …
