A six-mile stretch of Pleasant Hill Road between Lawrenceville and Buford highways, including parts of Lilburn, will see more traffic monitoring, the county announced this week. On Tuesday, the county Board of Commissioners approved a $847,668 project that will install cameras and fiber optic cables to allow the Gwinnett Traffic Control Center to monitor and react to the highly congested area. Outpouring palpable throughout the Berkmar community after the death of Agustin Cortes.
Social-networking web sites, a teenager's preferred means of corresponding these days, took on a numbing, somber tone Thursday. One male student remembered Cortes as his "closest and truest friend," reflecting on the memories they shared and wishing they could have grown up making more. Another student suggested that everyone wear black to school Friday in honor of Cortes. Yet another student posted that he…

Grief counselors help students cope with loss of Agustin Cortes, 17.
Regular traffic rolled Thursday morning just after sunrise over the macabre orange paint that outlined where the body of 17-year-old Agustin Cortes ended up on Pleasant Hill Road Tuesday night, the victim of a hit-and-run driver. Reports say he was found with his skateboard and iPod on the Pleasant Hill pavement near the intersection with Gwinnett Place Drive around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. It's a dark intersection at night, and, according to police, Cortes was wearing blue jeans, a black hooded jacket and a red knit cap. Also Thursday morning, just four miles east of the orange markings, on the same stretch of pavement, Berkmar High School students were finding out about Cortes' death at the hands of a careless driver, who has yet to be …
