The holidays are a good time to remember local charities that may need your help. Today we spotlight Reading to Learn, Inc.
Reading to Learn is Lilburn-based nonprofit organization that assists in homework help and tutoring for children. Rosemarie Lebert-Clark is the director and one of the founders of the program, which started in 2006. It offers support to all kinds of students, including those in public school, homeschool, college, adults and more. "We welcome any who want to remain ahead or catch up," the website reads. The majority of students come from Gwinnett and DeKalb counties. They are taught by highly trained teachers, including those with advanced degrees. Nine children, all victims of abuse and neglect, are trying to improve their outlook and future with one-on-one tutoring.
Two families are asking for financial assistance to fund afterschool tutoring for their children, who are struggling with learning disabilities the families say were caused by abuse and neglect. The nine children - six of whom were adopted through a foster family; three are being raised by their aunt and grandmother - are all taking one-on-one tutoring for reading, writing and math at Reading to Learn, a nonprofit organization that assists in homework help and tutoring in Lilburn. Reading to Learn may win a car for in video contest.
Reading to Learn, a non-profit organization that assists in homework help and tutoring for children, were chosen this month as finalists for the national Toyota 100 Cars for Good contest. The contest, which had thousands of organizations apply from all over the country, will give 100 organizations a Toyota vehicle, free of charge. The choices of the vehicle are a Toyota Sienna, Tacoma, Tundra, Prius or Highlander Hybrid. "We're going to choose the Highlander," said Rosemarie Lebert-Clarke, director and one of the founders of Reading to Learn.
