Gwinnett developer now scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 28 for bribing former Gwinnett County commissioner Shirley Lasseter.
U.S. District Court Judge Charles A. Pannell Jr. has continued the sentencing hearing for Gwinnett developer Mark Gary until late February. Gary pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge Oct. 1 in Judge Pannell’s courtroom and was scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 3. Gary’s sentencing is now scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Feb. 28 in Courtroom 2307 of the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in Atlanta. Federal prosecutors had requested a sentencing delay of up to 60 days to facilitate matters relating to Gary’s cooperation in an ongoing investigation of government corruption in Gwinnett County. The proposed 2013 Gwinnett County budget to be voted on in early January includes DA's request for a lead investigator into government corruption in the county.
The proposed Fiscal Year 2013 budget that the Gwinnett County Commission will consider approving in early January includes a $122,080 request from Gwinnett District Attorney Danny Porter to fund an assistant chief investigator. The funds that Porter requested for the position in September made it into the final budget proposal. This investigator would lead probes into government corruption in the Gwinnett County, which has been shaken by a series of incidents involving county officials that have tainted the county’s reputation and eroded public trust over the past two years. John Fanning, jailed without bond since a domestic dispute on Friday (Oct. 5) in Dacula that involved his estranged family, beat his wife with a table and table leg within view of their children, according to a Gwinnett Sheriff's incident report. Updated 2:51 p.m., Oct. 5, 2012 John Fanning, son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, was booked into the Gwinnett Detention Center on Friday morning (Oct. 5) on charges that include aggravated assault and cruelty to children (third degree), records show. Fanning, already facing a federal prison sentence for bribery and drug trafficking charges, is being held without bond on the assault charge, as well as a charge of false imprisonment. John Fanning, 34, of Dacula, son of former Gwinnett County Commissioner Shirley Lasseter, was sentenced to 57 months in prison Tuesday, Sept. 18, in U.S. District Court in Atlanta for bribery and drug trafficking. Carl “Skip" Cain, 66, of Flowery Branch, also received a sentence of 57 months on the same charges. Both prison sentences are without parole. U.S. District Judge Charles A. Lasseter, her son John Fanning and Carl “Skip” Cain had been scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 6 in federal district court in Atlanta. Their sentencing hearings will now occur at 2 p.m. on the new date.
